Saving Rotting Bananas by Turning it into a Sweet Dish

I bought saba bananas and kept some pieces of it since I planned to grill them when I have time but unfortunately, can't find time on weekdays and even on weekends I was not able to really stick to what I planned to do with the bananas. I craved for grilled bananas for some time but when I had a window of time, I found my self too lazy to do the grilling. After a few days, I checked the bananas and I was disappointed with myself for not paying attention to it. The days I left it sitting on an area, caused it to deteriorate.

The bananas were rotting indicated with the blackening of the peel which used to be bright yellow.

Seeing the bananas in this condition, I could have just throw them away but I felt the need to salvage them. I was taught not to waste any food although, I was guilty for doing so. So instead of just throwing them all away, I decided to make the most out of it.

I could not grill the bananas anymore since the condition was no longer suitable for grilling. So instead I decided to cook it with sugar. The recipe is called "Minatamis na Saging"

Minatamis na Saging is a Filipino dessert made with chopped bananas sweetened by cooking it in sweet syrup made from sugar and water.

The ingredient that I used are:

  • Chopped saba bananas
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of water
  • a pinch of salt

Since the bananas were rotting, the first thing I did was peel off the bananas and scraped off the rotten part.

After scraping off the rotten parts, I chopped the bananas into small pieces.

I then prepared a pot with 1 and 1/2 cup water added with 1/2 cup of brown sugar and heated it. I waited for the mixture to boil.

When the mixture boiled I then added the bananas to the pot. I adjusted the heat to medium heat and let the mixture simmer for 15 minutes or until the liquid or mixture thickens. I also added a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness of the mixture.

I turned off the heat and allowed the mixture to cool down. I then placed some of on a plate for me to consume.

So here's my sweetened banana or Saging na Minatamis. This can be served warm or chilled.

Letting myself taken over by laziness really have bad consequences. In this case I almost wasted this precious food. It's not alright to be wasting food nowadays so much more that prices of commodities are inflating non-stop. So if there are ways to save things, then we should do it so not to waste it.
