SUNNY AFTERNOON IN PULA

avatar
(Edited)

I had to spend some time in the city today. Visit some people. Buy some stuff ...

img_9267_malo.jpg

... and while there, in the city of Pula known mainly for its limestone colosseum ...

img_9260_malo.jpg

... I walked a bit around, quite aimlessly, and took a series of photographs along the way, as well.

img_9255_malo.jpg

There is truth in wine - states the board above the wine shop's entrance. The truth is cheap and sour, I say. Good wine is something you'll never find in that place, believe me. I know that shop well. It smells like a mix of sweat, vinegar, and depression.

The signs across the road can make you stop and think if you are driving a car. I stopped because of the shadow. It was elegant and clear, a nice addition to this Wednesday Walk.

img_9257_malo.jpg

A hundred meters further, a black cat crossed the street in front of me and disappeared under the parked cars.

img_9264_malo.jpg

I was walking towards the colosseum ...

img_9266_malo.jpg

... and when I got there ...

img_9261_malo.jpg

... I saw some girl talking to a cat.

img_9272_malo.jpg

The birds were resting, safely and quietly, about thirty meters above the scene ...

(Enlargeable)

... near the top of the ancient building built in between the year 27 BC and the year 68 AD for the Roman kind of, often bloody, entertainment. De gustibus non est disputandum.

img_9271_malo.jpg

Here you can see a Yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) surrounded by a group of Western jackdaws (Coloeus monedula). Besides the pigeons, these are the most common and numerous urban birds in Pula.

img_9276_malo.jpg

While passing by the colosseum ...

img_9277_malo.jpg

... I imagined it in black and white, but couldn't wash away the colors right there on the spot. Only now, while writing the post, the magic of Photoshop enabled me to do that.

img_9268_malo.jpg

Not far from the Colosseum, just across the pedestrian pathway and some decorative shrubs ...

(Enlargeable)

... I photographed this relatively small house surrounded by a pretty large open space, quite uncharacteristic for this old neighborhood.

img_9275_malo.jpg

A bit further I photographed another building that looked cool enough to enter this post.

img_9278_malo.jpg

Here you can see the church tower of the biggest church in town, squeezed in between two tall cypress trees.

img_9280_malo.jpg

On the way downhill, towards the place where my car was parked ...

img_9285_malo.jpg

... I noticed this active little chimney. I took this shot because I like the smoke in photographs. Too bad that the thing was visible only against the dark background of the tree, not against the sky, so I caught only half of the smoke at my disposal.

img_9283_malo.jpg

The cars were passing by. Some along the road that leads out of the old town ...

img_9288_malo.jpg

... other through the slightly distorted world inside the traffic mirror.

img_9284_malo.jpg

Soon I reached my own vehicle and drove out of the city, so this walk ends here.

As always here on HIVE, the photographs are my work - THE END.

A fascinating journey between the ancient, the ever-things of human and animal life, and the modern ... to think there is a second Colosseum in the world to go see! Not that I have anything against Rome, but you have made Pula seem like a rival.

About truth in wine ... ah, the sad truth of old, spoiled wine is hard ... but as I believe you said in Latin, there is no accounting for or disputing over taste ...

:D Yes, there are many kinds of truth and wine. Sometimes you can choose them ... maybe :) sometimes not ... this negation is also maybe ... ah, is not an exact science. :) Yes, the Colosseum of Pula it's a smaller rival to the capital one in Rome. It's definitively smaller in size, but because of its firm, resilient limestone construction is preserved better.

I saw that ... it is gorgeous ... terrible things done there, of course, but the Romans did their dirt in style! More mixing of truth with a strange flavor!

Hehehe Croatia currently, since the end of World War 2. But was in Italy for a period of time. And part of some others states and empires throughout history. It's officially a bilingual place, Croatian and Italian lenguage are both very present in the life of the city.

When I saw what you say is smoke, I looked at it and looked at it, I did not know what to think, well now I know, some people have omens with black cats, but since you change the color of the poor animals, it is absurd, but I respect whatever the others say, the coliceus is huge, think about the number of people who died there fighting for the fun of others, we are very barbarians ...
