climbing the stairs

IMG_1143.jpeg

I did a thing this past weekend.

I took a short hike into the mountains to a waterfall, stripped down to my underwear, and stood under it for as long as I could, which, for those of you who may be wondering, wasn’t very long.

More than the cold, what surprised me at first was the impact of the water on my head. Though the water flow wasn’t very heavy, the height from which it fell was significant enough to make it really slam into me.

After that, the cold quickly set in and ten seconds or so later, I had the worst case of brain freeze (like some people get from eating snow cones and Slushies too quickly) I’ve ever had. It was completely unbearable.

Despite the pain, I’m eager to do it again, and plans are set for another round of snowmelt bathing in March.

(1)

this tiny street
in the eyes of my son
an entire universe

(2)

intoxicating
the smell of perfume
in an empty room

(3)

the vacant lot
covered in frost
a morning bride

(4)

rainwater
running between houses
children play

(5)

beyond the temple
the landscape marked by
billowing smokestacks

(6)

climbing the stairs
your little hand in mine
moments frozen in time

(7)

together we sit
between day and night
a kind of blue

The onsen near our house had a small (warm) waterfall. If you had tightness in your back or shoulders, it was a delight to sit under it and let it massage you. A snow melt waterfall...I think I'll pass :)

I’ll tell you what, it’s amazing how warm, invigorated, and even loose you feel after a plunge in a cold waterfall. I was basically naked in 25 degree weather for a half an hour (trying to help my son get dressed) and felt fine.

That said, I understand why most pay say they’ll pass. 🤣

Great poem again! I've done the same with small waterfalls before, it's surprising just how strong it hits you when falling. I would never want to be under a large waterfall!

You must have been in the mountains I imagine. Water from that snowmelt is always freezing cold!

Yeah, I can’t imagine what it’s like being under a large waterfall. Something like Niagara Falls would probably crush a person.

This was right in the foothills of the mountains, so there wasn’t much snow on the hike in, but the water was coming from a very cold source.

I loved the one about the rain, it made me remember my youthful times with friends, playing under the white roof from where the drops fall mercilessly to meet the ground.

Thanks for sharing your verses.
Good day.

That sounds like a nice memory. Where is it you grew up? I’m trying to place the white roofs with a location.

These are all beautiful. I can so relate to the ones about your children. Xxx

I’m happy to hear that. Having children is one of those experiences that can really tie people together. There are so many moments and feelings involved in parenting that become easy points of connection between people.

Your post brought back memories of brain freeze. Can you believe I kind of miss it? Since I have to worry about my sugar now, I have not had a Frozen Coke in ages.

That’s not something that I think many people miss. 🤣

If you find a cold waterfall in Virginia, try sticking your head in it. It’s like an all-you-can-stand brain freeze machine. 😉

Haiku #1. Experiencing life through the lens of your child is adorable. They have less filters and programs to clutter their minds and blur their hearts. So precious. So beautiful.

Ouch! Brain freeze. Cold water can be a beast. Wim Hof comes to mind when withstanding low temperatures. His breathing technique is quite effective when trained and deployed correctly. I'm glad you're pushing the limits despite the pain ;)

I love Wim’s breathing techniques, but I’ve never actually tried them in cold water, which is where he really uses them. I’d like to see how long he could last under a cold waterfall. Some of the other people I was with were very impressive.

Life could be so beautiful if we could take in nature's wonderment, Keep up the good work.

It’s true. When we open ourselves to the world and nature, life becomes beautiful. Thank you for dropping by.
