from the train I see
Riding the train into Tokyo, through various forms of residential districts and urban hubs, I always find myself amazed by the number of people living in such a tight space.
How are they connected, I wonder.
Does the person living in the upper bedroom of that house over there know who lives in the room on the fourth floor of the building across the street? Have they ever seen each other? Do they spend their entire lives narrowly passing each other and never meeting?
Is there a bar or a café around the corner from their homes that they don’t even know exists, a place where, if they could find their way there, they would meet someone who would totally transform their lives?
From my seat on the train, I imagine arched lines and circles connecting people throughout the city.
Red arrows burst through the ceiling of the upper bedroom of the house over there and stretch across the sky, touching down in other neighborhoods, other wards, other cities, other prefectures.
It’s fascinating to me how we close people can be to each other and yet never meet or connect.

graduation
drops of rain
connect
even the snow seems
tired of winter

for the mess I made

So true and I feel that now more than ever ( especially with the so-called 'social media' and politics of the last couple of years, trying to split us up in groups/ camps, on any kind of topic.
I honestly miss my train rides. Since I moved from The Netherlands to Portugal, in 2018/19, traveling by train has become a lot less common. As a student in The Netherlands, back in the days, I could travel for free for many many years.
Why is it you could ride the trains for free in the Netherlands? Is that something that all students can do there?
I rarely ride the train where I live in Japan, and even when I do, it doesn’t produce the same effect. There’s something about riding in and out of Tokyo that always does this to me, going from the semi-residential sprawl into the inner city areas and vice versa.
Great poem! It is odd how in a big city you can pass people all day and live close by but never meet. I thought New York was like than by Tokyo has to be worse.

New York is definitely like that, although I feel it more on the streets there. Riding the train from Manhattan to Brooklyn and vice versa never made me wonder about the people in the buildings I passed for some reason. Maybe it’s because the imagery was too close to what I recognized from movies and hip hop videos, etc.
For some reason, riding in and out of Tokyo really gets my imagination wandering.
Understandable... That's part of the reason I've never enjoyed Manhattan that much, crowded. It's crowded in Orange County but it's much more spread out. It really does make you think about the lives all these people live. I can see how Tokyo would do it too. How long have you lived in Japan now?
