A Cold Day in Columbus: Lady Lasers in Action

This past weekend my wife and I spend Saturday morning at the ball fields watching my niece churn out three games as she nears the end of the fall ball season. The next time we head down to Columbus to watch her play she will be on the basketball court.

We actually made a little side trip on our way down. Her older sister has been asking @mrsbozz and I to stop by Tiffin to see the house that she is now renting with some of her teammates. It worked out well for us, so we stopped by Tiffin University on our way through and chatted with her for a bit.

After that, we proceeded the rest of the way to Columbus and had a nice evening visiting with her sister and our brother in law.

We knew it was going to be cold on Saturday, so we prepared a little better this year than we did last year. Last year when we came down for fall ball we underestimated how chilly it would be and we froze our butts off all day.

As I said, this time we came ready with winter coats, winter boots, and several layers of clothing including hats and gloves. It was downright cold with temps in the low 60's or high 50's and a brisk wind that probably dropped the "real feel" temps into the 40's. I'm surprised my face isn't wind burned from sitting there all morning.

Thankfully, she only had three games and they were back to back to back, so the day went rather quickly.

As has been the case, the team started off the morning pretty rough. They lost their first game 3 to 1 and although my niece had some really good hits, the team just looked a bit sluggish. That has been the case for a while now. I told my brother in law maybe they need to play a scrimmage first thing in the morning to get the blood flowing before they move on to their real games.

It was actually in the second game I mentioned that because they went on to score a whopping 22 runs in their remaining games of the day.

They beat the second team 11 to 0 and the third team 11 to 2 or something like that. They gave up more runs in that first game than they gave up all day. I think that first game was win-able for them too. They just need to wake up!

I always enjoy visiting Berliner Park down in Columbus, depending on what field you are on, you have the Columbus skyline in the background and it is pretty cool. You can just see it here in the photo I took while walking back to the quad where their second and third games were played.

Unfortunately, their bracket play game on Sunday morning went a bit similar to their first game on Saturday. They had a 2 to 0 lead heading into the last inning and then they gave up four runs to lose 4 to 2. It was heart breaking. They have always struggled when it comes to bracket play for some reason.

I wish they could figure it out, because they have so much potential. It was a win-able game for them. They just need to finish strong. My niece played really well and I don't know her stats, but she had some good offense and amazing defensive plays.

I'm a little sad that her fall season is almost over, but the good news is come next Spring she will be right back at it. Plus, we get to watch her play basketball soon, so that is always fun too!
