A good loss

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still reeling a bit from the whirlwind trip to East Lansing @mrsbozz and I took about a week ago to watch the Michigan State Spartans face the Iowa Hawkeyes. It was a good win for them heading into what was anticipated to be a really big game on Saturday against Duke. As I will explain in a bit, things didn't quite fall in favor of the Spartans, but as the title suggests, it was a good loss. If that sort of thing exists.

Let's go back to last Wednesday first and talk about the games leading up to the weekend. One week ago there were seven games in the top 25 on the men's college basketball schedule. Minnesota started things off with a big upset over number 22 Indiana 73 to 64. What a good way to open Big Ten conference play for the Golden Gophers.

Likewise, number 25 Arkansas had a nice upset over number 6 Louisville 89 to 80. Other than that, there were no other upsets in the top 25 on Wednesday night.

On Thursday there were no games in the top 25, everyone was probably busy watching the Detroit Lions take down the Dallas Cowboys.

Friday night we had only two games in the top 25. Neither of them were upsets and both of them were won by a pretty huge margin by the higher ranked team.

Finally, on Saturday we had ten games in the top 25. I didn't realize this at the time, but number 10 Iowa State had a huge win over the number 1 ranked team Purdue 81 to 58. That's a painful loss right there. I have a feeling it speaks more to Purdue having an off night than anything. That's a very lopsided score.

Then we have number 4 Duke coming into number 7 Michigan State. It was a really good game. The Spartans weren't really expected to win I don't think, but they have some nice wins against ranked teams earlier in the season. They played a good game keeping it really close, even leading at times in the game. Then ended up losing by six points to the team that is number 4 in the nation (actually number 3 now). I am not mad about that at all. There is still a lot of basketball to be played. Hats off to them for playing hard.

Michigan continues to hammer away at opponents and it makes me kind of mad that they are so good this year given the possibility Michigan State has to also be good. It would be nice if they could just rest on their laurels a bit, but despite the loss, Purdue is still a good team and with Michigan sitting in the number 2 spot, the Big Ten is going to be rough this year.

Washington had a huge upset of number 24 USC beating them 84 to 76, and number 14 Illinois took down number 13 Tennessee 75 to 62.

On Sunday there were six games played in the top 25. The sole upset being Nebraska taking down Creighton 71 to 50.

Monday there was no basketball, but then on Tuesday we had five games in the top 25. Sadly, none of them were upsets, but number 5 UConn had a close scrape barely beating number 18 Florida 77 to 73.

Michigan State is back in action on Saturday against Penn State. That could be a good game over in College Park.

There are the updates for this week. Check back next week for even more college hoops action!
