A Weekend of Heartbreaks

IMG20231029154415.jpg

As the title suggests, it was was a weekend of heartbreaks the past couple of days. My niece played in a couple softball games to almost close out her fall softball season and my nephew played in the playoff game for his football team.

I guess it wasn't all heartbreaks, but it was mostly heartbreaks.

My older nephew on @mrsbozz's side of the family had his football playoffs on Saturday. Unfortunately, they lost and that brings an end to their season. I guess my nephew was pretty upset about it. It's understandable. Even though they aren't playing at a high level, they put a lot of work and heart into what they do each weekend. It can be hard to regulate those emotions when everything starts coming down from that high.

My niece tried out for the varsity basketball team before heading to play a couple softball games. S he found out she made the team, so I am very proud of her. She is naturally athletic, but in my opinion, she needs to be a little more aggressive. I think she could be a real scrapper on the court if she wanted to be. She's a pretty great young lady though, so she might not have it in her to be that ruthless. I get it.

She had some decent games on Saturday, but then on Sunday she went 0 for 2 behind the plate which I am sure is driving her crazy. She holds herself to a high standard and I have a feeling that is eating away at her.

Hopefully she can turn things around when they head to Tennessee next weekend.

I'm going to leave the football for tomorrow, but Michigan State played in another exhibition game yesterday to support the people who suffered from the wildfires in Maui.

Although early season rankings have MSU at #4 and Tennessee at #9, the Spartans fell short by one point to lose the game. It's actually pretty impressive they did as well as they did based on the way they started. They had ten turnovers in the first four minutes of the game.

That's horrible especially given the fact that the Spartans have been plagued by turnovers for the past half decade. It's been their MO and the reason they have lost so many of the games they should have won.

Perhaps because this was a exhibition game, they were playing a little looser than they normally would. I hope that is the case. At one point they were down something like 17 to 1 in the first half. They put on a valiant effort and though I wish they could have gotten the win, I think this will be a great learning experience for them.

The fact that players could keep playing even after they fouled out didn't really help the game either. There was a Volunteer that should have been out before halftime even started. It was a quite physical game.

Coach Izzo has really done a great job with his recruiting and I am hoping this could be a the year that we take thing all the way to the final four and beyond. Purdue still has a really great team though and they are ranked #2 or 3 in the nation right now.

Of course it's pretty early to guess where we might be come March. I can hardly believe the start of college basketball is just a week away. I hope you are ready because you know I am going to be writing about it.

Meanwhile, the World Series started with Texas taking the first game in epic late game fashion. Only to drop the second game to Arizona. The series now heads to Arizona for game 3 tonight. I might try to catch a little bit of it before I drift off to sleep!

Check back tomorrow for my weekend football recap!

OK. I'll tell you about heartaches. I've spent 3 consecutive weeks watching the Cougars AND the Cardinals play bad football. BAD FOOTBALL.

There is some glimmering of hope for both but the hole is deep and they don't appear to have dropped the shovel yet.

Let the record show that I went out after my last HS football game and wrecked my Dad's pickup. Not only was I completely bummed by losing what I knew was my last football game (it turns out it wasn't, but that's an entirely different story) but I had mono that I'd refused to yield to in the last week of the season. I was barely ready for my senior year of baseball because of it...

Baseball/softball is a game of 'some days chicken, some days feathers'. Your niece will be just fine for the simple reason that she has been in the past. It would be in her best interest to get comfortable in the knowledge that hitting isn't the only way to help your team. I certainly worked harder when I wasn't hitting than when I was. For whatever that is worth.

I'm certain Sparty will hear his name called early in March, just as certain as I am the Zags will be there. Football is so bad for me that I am in 'Hurry Basketball' mode. And I mean real basketball, not that stuff the pros play.

Yeah, I am with you about the whole is basketball season here yet? We have a lot of pieces that I am hoping will make it really exciting to watch this year. I might even try to get to a live game if things work out. I don't expect there to be a bowl season or anything for MSU. That game against Indiana is my last hope for them to win one. I don't think they will even be able to handle Nebraska this year. I think I take the strikeouts harder than my niece. She is a defensive beast at center and SS, not much gets past her!

I expected a bowl season for the Cougs. It's not looking so good right now. Lost to both Arizona schools so I've had a fair amount of grief to take...

But, you know, Snakes Alive. If it can't be the Mariners (and it seems it just CAN'T be) then Arizona beating the ass cracks that beat the Mariners is a good thing :)

Sorry, I'm cheering for the Rangers. I honestly don't know why except maybe for the fact that Scherzer is on there. I've always liked him since he was on the Tigers. Other than that, I'm just waiting to see if the Lions can keep this momentum going!

I think the Lions are the real deal this year. February real, maybe.
