Big Moves

Well, that's a wrap. The regular season is pretty much in the books with the exception of the Army/Navy game and whatever other game happens after the conference championships are done. It was kind of smart for them to save the big Michigan/Ohio State game until the last week of the season. I think it kept the anticipation high. It also gave the Michigan fans some hope that they might still make it to the playoffs. Only to have those hopes dashed with a hammering from Brutus.

I watched a fair bit of college football this past weekend in between spending time with family and I actually think some of the best games were the unranked match ups.

I'll talk about those in a bit though.

I was hoping for a few more surprises this past weekend. The fact that many of the underdog teams had home field advantage gave me a little bit of hope that we might see some upsets. Unfortunately, that wasn't really the case.

With a couple of exceptions. The first being the biggest with number 16 Texas upsetting number 3 Texas A&M 27 to 17. That's a big loss for A&M heading into the conference championship games. In other upset news, number 25 Arizona took down number 20 Arizona State 23 to 7, and California beat number 21 SMU 38 to 35.

I'd also like to point out that LSU almost upset number 8 Oklahoma, but ultimately fell short 17 to 13.

I'm sure you probably already heard, but in the big rivalry game number 1 Ohio State vs. number 15 Michigan, the Buckeyes had a commanding victory 27 to 9. Even with the snow flying in Ann Arbor. It was a good win for Ohio State and honestly, I am not mad about it. Their fan base is a lot further removed from where I live, so I don't really have to hear them brag about the win like I would if Michigan had upset them.

Like I said though, there were some pretty good non ranked games over the weekend as well. That Penn State/Rutgers game being one of them. Penn State had the big 40 to 36 win over the Scarlet Knights. It was fun to watch. I had high hopes for the Iowa/Nebraska game, but that ended up being a blow out.

Finally, the Michigan State/Maryland game was pretty high on my list as well. I mean, MSU has had a miserable season this year, so that was annoying, but they were able to pull out a single regular season win in their final game against Maryland at Ford Field in Detroit.

It's actually kind of sad because people were so disinterested in this game that they were actually giving tickets away for free. No kidding, if you bought one ticket they were giving you three for free. If you watched the game, you might have noticed all the empty seats in the place. It probably ended up costing them money.

If we hadn't been in the middle of our first snow storm of the season, I might have actually went myself.

Despite the one win, Michigan State still decided to bit the 33 million dollar bullet and fire coach John L Smith after just two years with the program. Of course they have to buy out his contract to do it to the tune of the amount I mentioned above. I would have much rather gotten the old Penn State coach, but he ended up going to Virginia Tech.

Instead, we are getting the guy from Northwestern that just got fired. I've seen mixed emotions about the new hire, but the proof will be in the pudding come next season. Either he gets us wins or he doesn't. I really miss the Dantonio days right about now.

No doubt with the regular season over and bowl dreams dashed, there will be a lot of other universities making some changes as well.
