Catching a little league game

It's been a struggle to get this post written this morning. I have been pulled in about a million different directions and it has kept me from spending the time I want in this window. Last night I got to go watch my youngest nephew play baseball about an hour down the road from where @mrsbozz and I live.

We were supposed to go watch his brother play his first game, but he wasn't feeling the best and was home sick instead of playing his game, so we went to the other game instead.

You can see my nephew at the plate batting away in the photo above. He didn't have the best game offensively, but on defense, he was money.

Let me set the stage for you.

These little league games are set to be 6 innings total. In most innings, each team can only score five runs before they have the other team come up to bat. Given the fact that the kids are pitching for the first time, this keeps things moving along more smoothly.

Supposedly.

The games are also supposed to be capped at 2 hours but if you start an inning before the 2 hour mark, you have to finish it.

That was the case last night.

With just six minutes left before the two hour mark, they started the sixth inning.

I should also mention, in the sixth inning each team can score as many times as they want, they don't cap it at five runs.

On top of that, despite it being the middle of June, the temps were down in the 50 degree range and there was no sun. We were freezing! So we enter the 6th inning and my nephews team was up 11 to 5. Well sure enough, the other team comes up to bat and they start walking runners in.

The game didn't start until 6, so by now it was 8:30 and we still had an hour drive home plus I needed to get up at 5 for work, so my wife said let's go. I think everyone understood, but I still felt a little bad about leaving before the game was over.

We were on our way home and we got a phone call.

They put my nephew in to pitch and where the previous pitcher was struggling to get the three outs they needed, he knocked their batters out 1 - 2 - 3. Ugh, how could would have that been to see?

He ended up getting the game ball for coming through in the clutch. So awesome. I am so proud of him. He is pretty athletic, so I think he is going to excel at whatever sport(s) he finally settles on as he gets older.

If it hadn't been so cold this actually would have been a pretty enjoyable experience. It seriously took me a good 12 hours to finally get warmed up after sitting in the cold wind all night.

It sounds like his brothers games go a lot quicker, so I am sure we will be running down to catch one of those in the near future. Despite his absence, his team won their game last night.
