David vs. Goliath: Lasers battle a giant

Unfortunately, this David versus Goliath story doesn't end the same way the other one does. It was a bit of a rough weekend for the Lady Lasers. The first team they were supposed to play in pool play unexpectedly dropped out of the tournament.

Luckily, there was another team that was willing to play my nieces team so they could at least get two games in on Friday.

Where my nieces team is a 15U team (which means all players were under 15 years of age before the cut off date), the team they played was an 18U team.

On top of that, this 18U team that they played had 10 Division 1 commits on their team. That basically means ten of the players on their team were good enough to make teams that are in the top level of the college softball.

Yikes!

Needless to say, they lost that game 6 to 0, but they played hard and I was really proud of them. They had some close chances to score and I am actually a bit surprised the other team didn't beat them by a lot more. I heard a rumor that the 18U team they played is that organizations national team, so they knew it was going to be a tough game going in. They still accepted the challenge.

Their second game was a lot closer, but they still ended up falling short 5 to 6 in a loss against the "Batbusters".

On Saturday, they continued pool play by wining against a team from Tennessee 9 to 8. Then, they lost their final pool play game 2 to 5. I actually don't mind that they have some losses in pool play as long as it means they can do better in bracket play.

That has kind of been the case the past two weekends.

Sunday was the start of bracket play and the team started the day really well with a run rule win against a 16U team 11 to 0. Unfortunately, their day was cut short in their next game when they fell 7 to 8 due to a walk off run by the other team.

They were keeping the game really close, but they just couldn't finish it.

Next weekend the team stays a little closer to home and plays at a tournament in Marion, OH which is just about 45 minutes away from where they live. This team actually has ladies from all over the area, so some will have to travel further than others.

I look forward to seeing how they can do in the future games. They have definitely been growing this summer and a few of the players who have been in a bit of a slump are starting to heat up. If they can all get hot at the same time, it should be a sight to see!
