Fastest Man in the World?

A couple of weekends ago I got the chance to watch some baseball with my nephew. As I mentioned in this post, he becomes a little obsessive about the things he is interested in. It just so happens that right now his passion is baseball.

Before we started trying to watch and follow the Rugby match that I was talking about yesterday, we found a couple of baseball games on TV. The first just so happened to be a game against the Cincinnati Reds and I couldn't tell you who the other team was.

I can sort of remember being his age and trying to learn as much as I could about every star player who was out there. These days, I just stick to my Detroit Tigers and honestly, I watch them so infrequently that I couldn't tell you half the players.

If you are a baseball fan and you follow the game, there is little doubt you have heard of Elly De La Cruz. I had never heard of him, but he is definitely on my radar now. He happened to come up to the plate and my nephew said "fastest man alive". I said "oh, Usain Bolt is playing baseball now?". He looked at me with a blank stare.

I said "Usain Bolt, fastest man in the world". He continued to look at me blankly.

Apparently Elly has proclaimed himself the "fastest man in the world".

I have a feeling Bolt might argue that.

After watching him play though, I wouldn't argue with the fact that De La Cruz might be the fastest man in baseball.

In the particular game we had on, I watched him steal second, then third, and finally home in a matter of a couple pitches. He is definitely fast. It was a pretty impressive show to watch.

Fast.... Yes!

Fastest man in the world... Close, but not quite.

What do you think? Have you seen De La Cruz play?

Additionally, we got to watch a game between the Braves and the Rays. I was really impressed by the work of Strider on the mount. He was making the ball do some pretty crazy stuff. It has to be the mustache. It has super powers or something.

It was fun sharing this experience with my nephew. I guess it is always a bit of fun to share something that a kid is passionate about with them. Just this past weekend I got visit a minor league game with him, but I am going to save that for another post.

Have you seen Strider throw? What do you think? It's pretty amazing what players can do with the ball these days. Maybe the are doctoring it, maybe it is natural talent, what I do know is that I could never even hope to get a hit off one of them.

Much respect to the players who do!

Nice that you caught some games. I don't know those players but I was watching Moneyball this week and was feeling really pumped for the game. Still hard to know all the rules though as I only played softball when I was younger.

Moneyball is a great movie. Such a crazy story too. I really dig that show and the song at the end is on one of my favorite playlists. Softball is pretty much the same. Just quicker and shorter. I think you would fair pretty well if you know that game.
