Lady Shamrocks Laying it Down!

Imagine my surprise last night when my wife told me that my niece was playing another high school game. They had just played on Tuesday night and I thought we were done with softball until Friday this week. Not that I am complaining. I love softball.

I was going through some old photos and I stumbled across the one above. It's hard to believe she used to be that young. Gone are her pitching days, she now plays short stop and is an absolute beast!

It was another rout by the Lady Shamrocks beating Groveport-Madison 18 to 6. The game went six innings, but it really could have been done in the 5th if Coffman had just been a little tighter on defense. They were up and ready to run rule the other team when they allowed three runs, cutting their lead to 9 and negating the run rule. It wasn't until the 6th when they put up a few more runs and then only allowed one more to score that they triggered the rule.

While offense seems to be no problem for the Rocks, they still seem to be having a few issues on defense. I hope they can shore things up before they get into the midst of their season. I know my niece is probably being pretty hard on herself for a couple of miscues that happened at her position.

I think she just got ahead of her self and rushed a little more than she should have. It happens.

As for basketball, the Sweet 16 games start tonight at 7:09 PM. We will first see 6 seed Clemson face off against 2 seed Arizona. This should be a fairly easy win for Arizona, but it's March, so you never quite know!

Once that game gets stared, we have the second game taking place at 7:39 PM with 5 seed San Diego State taking on 1 seed UConn. Again, this should be a pretty easy game. UConn has been playing like the best team in the country lately. They are definitely the favorite to win the championship again. I watched them the other day and they just look really good.

At 9:39 we have 4 seed Alabama taking on 1 seed North Carolina. This game could be a little more interesting. I'm honestly not sure which way to lean on this one. I'm not a fan of Alabama at all, but I also don't care too much for the Tar Heels as they eliminated Michigan State from the tournament.

If I had to pick one though, I'm going to go with North Carolina. I have them going all the way to the Final Four in my bracket after all.

Finally, at 10:09 PM (well past my bed time), 3 seed Illinois is going to be taking on 2 seed Iowa State. I've gotta go with Illinois on this one simply for the fact that they are a Big 10 team and I like them more than I like Purdue.

I have Illinois losing to UConn in the next round anyway, but we will see what happens. I don't really expect to win anything with my bracket this year, but it would be nice to at least come close. I didn't enter into any pools this season, but I always share my bracket with an old work friend and she submits it. If she wins, she splits the pot with me.

The women's tournament is also happening right now, but I haven't been following that as closely as I thought I would. Mostly due to the fact that I have been watching softball. I think once the final four gets here, my wife and I will probably pay a bit more attention.

Check back tomorrow when I cover the results from tonight and give you my thoughts on the next four games in the Sweet 16 before we head into the Elite 8 later in the weekend.
