Marathon Diamonds: Weekend Softball in Findlay,OH

If you are ever heading down I-75 South from Toledo, OH, you have more than likely passed through Findlay. It's the point where many people exit I-75 and veer off onto US23 to make their way to Columbus, OH. Myself included.

As I explained in this post, @mrsbozz and I have been through Findlay many times on our way to Columbus, but we have never actually stopped and visited Findlay. That all changed this weekend when my niece was playing a softball tournament down there.

Just one exit North of Findlay is the location of Marathon Diamonds. You can actually see them from the expressway as you are passing by and we have often commented that we wondered what they were like.

Now we know!

After three games in the 90 degree heat on Saturday, we know very well what the fields are like!

This is actually where the University of Findlay has their home softball and baseball games in addition to the tournaments that take place on the weekends.

There are five fields total in the main complex as well as a "miracle field" off to the side. The miracle field is where they play "miracle games". The field has all kinds of accessibility features, so handicapped kids can play games there. They go all out with announcers and every bell and whistle you can think of to make the experience memorable for those kids.

The Lady Lasers Scarlet team had a great Saturday going 3 and 0 on the day. They won their first game 5 to 3, their second game 9 to 3, and their third game 5 to 2. They had some errors in the field that didn't help them too much, but it was a good day all around.

My brother in law was saying that it is hard sometimes to transition between turf and a regular field because the ball behaves differently. Unfortunately for them, they are swapping back an forth every other weekend between the two surfaces, so they will need to be mindful of that.

My niece had a really great weekend. As I said, she had a few errors and she was starting to get in her head about it, but they have an awesome coach and he was able to give her the pep talk she needed to keep going.

I think sometimes as much as I enjoy watching the team, I enjoy watching the coach just as much. I felt the same way when my brother in law was coaching. It's great to see how they inspire and motivate the young ladies to do their best.

At the end of the day on Saturday pool play was over and my nieces team found themselves sitting in the #2 seed for bracket play the next day.

Unfortunately, they had a little trouble waking up on Sunday morning and they dropped their first bracket game 2 to 4. That meant their day was over and with that, @mrsbozz and I turned our truck back North and headed home.

It was really awesome watching my niece play and I can't wait to see how well she does the rest of the summer. I am not sure I will be able to make it to another game with our camping season starting up, but I will definitely be watching via a stream if I can't be there in person.

This coming weekend my oldest niece has a team of friends she helped put together and they are going to play some games with my brother in law coaching. I look forward to seeing how they do playing summer ball again. It should be fun!
