NCAA Week 9/NFL Week 8 Recap: I see you Nebraska!

It what may have been Michigan States last chance to win a football game this season, they had a pretty horrible showing. The lone bright spot in the day was this guy right here. After dumping Kim as quarterback after a couple of games and moving to Katin Houser, the Spartans finally decided the hurting had to stop and they put in Sam Leavitt. That's when the magic started to happen for MSU, but by then it was too late.

Sure, he threw that late game interception that closed out their final possession of the game and ended what was shaping up to be a miraculous drive, but at this point, it might be time to move on. Leavitt shows a certain level of mobility that we haven't seen in an MSU quarterback up to this point. Kim had some moves, but nothing like we have seen with #4.

He's young and still has lots of time to work out those first game jitters. We will see what happens next weekend when the Spartans face Nebraska. If Leavitt gets the start, they just might have a chance against a Huskers team hat is 5-3 on the season. I'm not holding my breath though.

After that they have what will likely be an impossible game at Ohio State, and then a game at Indiana which might be within their reach before finally facing Penn State in what I expect will be a defeat.

In other news, Northwestern beat a good Maryland team 33 to 27 and #25 Kansas State blanked Houston beating them 41 to 0. I should also point out that #22 Kansas beat #10 Oklahoma 38 to 33. With a preseason #1 ranking in basketball, this could be a good year for Kansas.

Indiana gave #9 Penn State a bit of a fit, but they ended up falling 33 to 24.

How about that USC/California game? USC pulled out the 50 to 49 win. Good god, was there any defense on the field at all?

#19 Tennessee had a tough game against the Kentucky Wildcats, but they were able to come out victorious 33 to 27.

Finally, in other upset news, Arizona took down #16 Oregon State 27 to 24.

It was a good weekend in the NFL, mostly because my Lions won last night on Monday night football. I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and it feels like pretty much everyone in the area was at the game. Except for @mrsbozz and I. We were snuggled up in our bed catching up on some much needed sleep.

Bills fans will be happy that Buffalo bounced back from their loss the other weekend and beat Tampa Bay.

I noticed that Minnesota beat Green Bay and that is actually not a great thing because the Vikings are right behind the Lions in the rankings. Having them get knocked down a peg by The Packers could have been a good thing. That just means the upcoming match up between the Lions and the Vikings is going to be even more important.

Atlanta had a tough loss to Tennessee as the Titans debuted a new quarterback who apparently lit things up.

In an interstate battle, The Giants fell to the Jets 13 to 10.

Carolina had a close game against Houston and won 15 to 13. I don't think anyone probably cared too much about that game. It should be pointed out that Houston is sitting second in their division, so maybe more people cared that I realized.

Probably the biggest news of the weekend would be the 24 to 9 loss that Denver handed Kansas City. Which isn't too bad given the fact that one or two weeks into the season, Denver was pretty much the laughing stock of the league.

Additionally, Cincinnati beat San Fransisco leaving The Eagles as the only remaining team with one loss in the NFL.

Finally, you know I need to give some props to the Lions for their Monday night win over Las Vegas. The defense was back to normal holding the Raiders to only two touchdowns in the game. It wasn't enough to overcome the 26 points that Detroit put up.

Well done Detroit!

The Lions have a bye next weekend before they head into what could be a tough game against the Chargers. Following that is a game against "da bears" before they head into a Thanksgiving showdown against Green Bay.

I know a lot can happen between now and then, but I think the Christmas Eve match up between Detroit and Minnesota is going to be the game to watch.

The Vikings lost their qb (which nobody seems to care about) so I doubt they'll be able to catch the Lions...assuming they continue to win the games they should (Bears, Packers, etc.). That said, the Vikings defense is really starting to figure it out under Flores so if they continue to progress, it could get very interesting the rest of the way. It sounds like they'll be starting their rookie at qb going forward so who knows what could happen. With the defense stepping up, maybe we've got another Brock Purdy on our hands. (a guy can dream....) :-)

PS. I'm sorry but your Spartans are terrible. They were gifted two turnovers in Gopher territory to start the game and only got 6 pts. You're last qb showed some moxie but once the defense saw him for a series, they adjusted and shut him down. I'd love to see them beat Nebraska but...I'm not holding my breath.

Oh, no kidding, Cousins got hurt? I guess I hadn't heard that. I've been on the road and out of the loop for a bit though. I didn't even stay up late enough to watch the Lions win the other night. I feel like I am still a day or two behind on my sleep after getting back from our trip.
