Some big rivalries this weekend

There are a couple football (American) games that are going to keep me glued to the TV this weekend. It's just because the teams happen to be two of my favorite teams, I honestly think there is a lot of history (or will be), and because of that, I think they are going to be must-watch TV.

Let's get the NFL game out of the way first even though it doesn't take place until Sunday. I'm talking of course about the Detroit Lions/Seattle Seahawks game. If you were following the NFL at the end of last season, you might know that Detroit was on a bit of a run and it was looking like they had a chance of making it to the playoffs for the first time in quite some time.

They had beaten Green Bay and had half their ticket punched to the post season. All they needed was for Seattle to lose. Unfortunately, due to some shady calls by the officials, the Seahawks won their game and blocked the Lions from making it to the playoffs.

I have little doubt the Lions have not forgotten that fact anymore than I have. There is a good chance they are going to be out for blood when they play this weekend.

I look forward to seeing just how badly they can beat Seattle. Of course, if you are a Lions fan, you know that they are a mercurial team and pretty much anything can happen when they take the field. At least that's how it used to be. This current team under the guidance of Campbell and Goff could be just what the city of Detroit needs to break all the bad juju that they have had over the past decade or two.

Before that happens though, on Saturday we have my Michigan State Spartans facing off against Washington. While this might not be a traditional rivalry, the fact that Washington is going to be moving to the Big 10 could mean these two teams will be playing a lot more of each other in the future.

I'm honestly a little worried about the game this weekend. Washington is ranked #8 in the nation, so they aren't anything to take lightly. The fact that MSU is playing at home could help, but the recent shake up with Michigan States head coach could loom large over the game.

Don't get me wrong, Dantonio is the man. Just having him on the field might give the Spartans a fighting chance. Which is good because they are going to need it. As much as I hate the college football rankings, they usually aren't that wrong. The fact that Washington is sitting at #8 is probably well earned and something that is going to be at the front of the Spartans minds going into this weekend.

I know it is horrible to say, but given the past couple of years and the current sex scandal at Michigan State, I am going to be happy with a winning season. If they do better than that, all the better, but my life is going to keep moving forward either way.
