Friday Finance 11/18/2022: Grant Day!
It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the Leo community.
With my home state of Michigan suddenly being plunged into the heart of winter, it is easy to understand why the crypto markets are often associated with the seasons. Just like the four inches of snow we had dumped on us over the last day and the icy roads this morning, crypto winter is no joke.
It's important for everyone including the markets to "slow their roll", or they are definitely going to get rekt. The good news is, unless you are in Narnia or Westeros, winter doesn't last forever and if we can weather this storm, we can make it through to brighter days!
Grant Day
As I mentioned in my title, today is grant day. Working for a public school district, funding is often hard to come by. The state government uses some funky calculation to figure out how much money we get per pupil. It's supposed to be "fair", but it often is not. They base it on a ton of factors (I don't even know all of them), and surprise surprise, the affluent communities seem to always get more.
Working in a rural school district in the middle of nowhere Michigan, that doesn't work out so well for us.
Thankfully, several years ago a tribal casino opened their doors up the road from us. At the time, tribal casinos had a choice, they could pay taxes on their earnings from slot machines, or they could donate 2% of their revenue back to the community in the form of grants.
The second option is way better public relations and probably the cheaper one, so most casinos prefer to do that. I think the laws have changed now, but our tribe still continues to do the 2% distributions twice a year (Spring and Fall).
Today is the day where we get to go to the awards ceremony and pick up our check. It usually comes in around $80,000 USD each cycle if I remember correctly. This distribution has been a huge boon to our district. It has allowed us to stay competitive in a sector where not much love is offered from the powers that be or the communities in which we work.
Personally, I wrote two grants this window and my wife wrote one, so I will be making the drive up to the tribal center to sit with our districts Superintendent and thank the Saganing Chippewa Indian Tribe for their generosity.
No matter your feelings on gambling, you can't deny this is a great thing for our community and the kids which we serve every day.
Power up Milestone
I'm pretty excited for today. In a little bit, I should be able to collect the post rewards for my @bozz.sports account. When I do, that should push that account over 2000 HP. I don't post to that account as much as I do to this one and I definitely haven't invested as much time into it.
It is still exciting for me. That account has been a great way to keep my love of sports active and separate from my main blog. It is a lot of extra work when I am posting there regularly, but hitting 2000 HP is proof that it pays off. I am really excited to see how I can grow that account in the future. If you aren't following it already and you are a fan of sports, you should check it out.
I frequently cover American Football and College Basketball. I love talking about underdog upsets and the college basketball tournament in March is one of my favorite times of year.
GLX
Finally, if you haven't heard, the GLX token is one of the hottest things on Hive right now. It is for the Genesis League Soccer project that the Splinterlands team is working on. We are seeing a run on it. With huge staking rewards, people are picking it up like fire. Since it is a daily airdrop, that means people are also dumping it like fire.
So far the market has supported both sides of the trade. The price is pretty decent at close to .8 Hive per token right now. You need to have SPS staked in your account to get the airdrop. I've been getting a decent amount per day. I have been trying to split the difference and stake some of it while also selling some of it.
I don't want to miss out on something great, but having a lot of liquid Hive right now feels like a smart move too. There is a new BRO token coming out that I am curious about and I kind of want to have some funds available to move into that. I really feel like I missed the ball on the original BRO token given it's current value from where it started.

Having liquid Hive is indeed a smart move especially during the current market conditions and there seems to be a lot of projects popping off lately on the Hive ecosystem. Having liquid Hive will enable one to get into them early. I also miss the ball on the original BRO token, it's one of the best performing tokens on Hive.
Yeah, BRO is totally my fault. I was in the community when they first popped on the scene, then I stopped visiting due to some of the members there. By the time I circled back around it was too late.

Im pretty excited about the GLS game and dont get enough airdrop or staked SPS to really do anything, so just hodl what I've got.
I am curious about the new BRO token too! Wen BRO?
Sounds like the announcement for Bro is going to happen on the 22nd for big stake holders and then the 28th for the rest of us plebs. I will need to see the details, but I am hoping to ape in a little. I'm building a small bag of Hive from my GLX sales.
