The E.U. as such has always been a US-driven project, not something wanted or built by European nations themselves anyway.
The EU as we know it was at its best during the 1990s when it was primarily a free trade zone for the nations of Europe. The EU became worse when it began to act as a government, issuing regulations.
Gradually, then suddenly. The EU as a body is dead weight to most individual countries
