Saludos, amigos.

Throughout all these days—it’s been a month and a few days since the earthquake struck our country, Venezuela—I realized that new fears had surfaced within me as a mother. That day marked a turning point in my life, and one of the aspects that became most prominent in my daily life was my role as a mother. Because on that day, I experienced what it’s like to have no control over my children’s lives—or even my own—and it’s a terrible feeling, as all those emotions and feelings came flooding in at once in that instant when everything literally shook.
After that day, I discovered I had new fears regarding my children—like the fear of leaving them home alone, or the fear of them going out on their own to do their usual activities without me or their dad being with them... It’s been a process these past few days with everyone at home, as we’ve tried to carry on amid bouts of anxiety, sadness, and worry. Although we weren’t hit as hard as others, our family is doing well and we still have a roof over our heads. It’s been quite a challenge to keep these new fears—which we’ve discovered as a result of this horrible experience—in check.
My children, ages 14, 18, and 31, have each tried to carry on in their own lives—at their jobs and in their studies, although those who are in school are now on break. It hasn’t been easy, and even though I’ve tried to keep these fears in check around them, it’s impossible not to want to know at every moment where they are, who they’re with, and their exact location; we’ve agreed to make this another rule, to give us all peace of mind; that is, if my children go out, they have to keep us informed now more than ever—just as my husband and I keep them informed when we go out. This is something we didn’t do with such precision before, but in light of what we’ve been through, these are the new rules.
We now understand more clearly than ever that every day is a gift from God, that what we share each day is important—even the smallest things—and now, because of this, our children understand us as parents much better and appreciate our concern; they no longer protest when we ask questions, nor do the teenagers roll their eyes like they used to when we’d say, “Let me know when you get there, or tell me where you’re going and who you’ll be with.” They now understand that these things are important and that, if they want to keep my anxiety and fears in check, they must maintain open communication about these matters—without reproaches or disapproving looks.
Although I confess that letting them go “back to normal” was quite difficult for me, I realized that life goes on and that I can’t keep them under my wing like a mother hen; it’s impossible and it’s not healthy. Aside from discovering that, as a mom, you can always have new fears, it was very clear to me that right now I’m here in front of my keyboard writing to you because God is great—of that I have no doubt. Greetings, friends.
