Evangeline, was anxious, because she was going to receive a visit from her mother, who was a very possessive, controlling, manipulative person and with whom she throughout her life, when she could become independent from her, she did it, without remorse, because she had a very gray childhood next to her and her father, a man, extremely strict, who did not know how to resolve conflicts in a kind way, if it was not with physical or verbal abuse; So in view of her not very encouraging outlook, Evangeline soon moved away from home, in order to start living her own life, without so many restrictions and even without so many tears, because more than one night she would go to bed hugging them next to her pillow...

Remembering those dark days filled Evangeline with anguish as soon as she knew that once again her mother was visiting her for an undetermined period of time, because she had health issues to solve and wanted to see for herself what her daughter was doing, how she lived, who she was with and all the details of her existence, which up to that moment Evangeline had been careful to keep from her, because she did not want "advice", nor arguments with her, nor family dramas.

Sometimes she wondered why she could not have a mother like almost everyone else, one who would be her support without complaints, that loving mother who would welcome her with open arms, without any "sentimental" undertones or charges, those that are made in the form of manipulation and that you feel are not real at all. Those thoughts tormented her, every time she found herself in a situation involving her mother, she longed to be able to change her mother or at least get the solution to deal with her... But it was very difficult.

It had been many years of manipulation, of tense situations and Evangeline did not want to deal with that anymore, she felt anxious knowing that soon she would have to have her close and she would not be able to say goodbye as she did in the phone calls, when she would get intense with her complaints and calls for attention, now she would have to hear her usual litany loudly and as long as her mother wanted... This perspective of coexistence had her on the verge of madness, stress was present, it was as if she was cornered against the wall and they barely let her breathe, that's how she felt...

The day came and Matilde arrived at Evangeline's house, the first days were somewhat relaxed, with her usual complaints, but the situation was manageable; but as the days went by, Matilde took possession of her daughter's space, she changed the furniture in the place, she implemented her routines for meals and way of life. Her house became a replica of her mother's. At one point, Evangeline became a bit of a dream come true. At one point, Evangeline felt like when she was in school, obediently doing whatever her mother told her to do.

When it dawned on her, she went into crisis because her world was no longer her world, she was a prisoner in her own home, she no longer felt free to walk and be. So, that night, she locked herself in her room and began to pray silently asking God for wisdom, peace, for her life, to be able to take control of her life again, she cried bitterly because even though she was a grown woman, her mother had the power to make her feel miserable at this point in her life; that night Evangeline let the tears roll freely down her face..., but she had already made up her mind.

At dawn, she got up and decided not to go to work, she had to put a stop to her mother, she had already made the decision. When Matilde saw that she did not go to work, she asked her why she did not go, then Evangeline took advantage of the moment to sit down and invite her to do the same and began to talk... She asked her not to interrupt her until she had finished. She told him that she was tired of so many dramas, that she no longer accepted to be imposed on her with the excuse that "I am your mother", that she had her own life and that she had the right to live it and make her own decisions, and that she was not going to allow him to interfere in her affairs.

That she loved her as the mother she was, but that she could no longer allow him to continue managing her life at his whim and disposition, she could no longer allow it, it was not healthy for her and that the best thing was that she understood that her daughter had grown up a long time ago and that if she did not want to understand it, unfortunately she would have to stay away from her, because she could not cope with so much emotional burden that this was already affecting her physically and she could not continue in this emotional wear, which had her as stagnant, lifeless. They both had lives that they should share, but in a different way, not in this toxic way. Enough was enough.

Matilde listened in silence, for the first time her daughter had stopped her suddenly, and she was taken aback, she said nothing at all and went to her room with total bewilderment, because she did not know how to act before her daughter. The next day she packed her bags and left without telling Evangeline. When she arrived home from work, she noticed that her mother was not there and now a little more relieved, although with a bit of bewilderment because of her mother's attitude, she could finally rest in peace for many months..., months went by and Matilde was a different person, even on the phone, she no longer complained, she talked happily as she had not heard her for a long time. .... Evangeline thanked God for having given her the poise, the wisdom and the right words to be able to make her mother react, it was a new beginning for both of them...

Español ojos I.png

This is a very thoughtful story, and thought-provoking. You present here one of the most profound conflicts a person can face: that between parent and child. You describe the dilemma facing Evangeline well: how to separate from a parent without destroying the relationship with that parent? Ideally, the mother would be able to respect Evangeline's independence. Very little in life is ideal. It became necessary for Evangeline to literally grow up, and define boundaries for her mother.

You have not only a conflict, but a resolution. Well done. Thank you for engaging with your fellow authors.

Evangeline handled the situation maturely and it's a good thing her mother gave her the space she has always wanted. Nice story.

I'm glad that Evangeline had the courage to stand up to her mother . If not , it would have weighed down on her emotionally. Nice story

Yes, the message is that it is better to say things and face situations that cause us discomfort, to feel better emotionally and even physically. Thank you for your visit!

What Evangel did is a strong emotion display, to be able to stand before her mother. That's how a conflict should be resolved, isn't it?

The prompt word was well utilised in this piece.

Communicating is very important in any kind of relationship and above all listening to understand and here we saw that action reflected, fortunately for both of us. Greetings!

This narrative is highly insightful and makes you think. It's a good thing her mother gave Evangeline the distance she had long wished for since she handled the issue with maturity.

Quite a great display of majority from Evangeline it was quite good of her. Most times our parents just don't know when to stop they keep making us feel as if they have to take decisions for us all our lives and fail to understand that we have all grown up and really need that privacy. I am glad her mother learnt this and also happy it was a step to a great change for both of them.
