Hello dear friends in this community, how are you all doing? Hope you are all in top shape and feeling this glorious month of January. We are way past the middle of the month now and for some of us, the year is off to a great start.

Today, I am here to talk about yet another national day that is not just observed all over the world, it is also important to all of us bloggers that are writers in one way or the other. It is National Thesaurus Day, and it is celebrated on the eighteenth of every January.

The Thesaurus was created by Peter Mark Roget; he started writing the book in the year 1848 and finished it in the year 1852. That is four solid years of hard work and dedication. At first, it had only fifteen thousand words, but with time and over the years, revisions have been made and new editions include new words.

It is a book that can be used to find the synonyms of different words. That is, you can find the different types of words you can use to describe a particular action or feeling, or expression.

Take for example I am feeling happy but I do not want to make use of that particular word, I would go to my thesaurus and look up synonyms of happy and I will find other words like; merry, delighted, overjoyed. These words have the same meaning, but the contexts in which they can be used varies based on what is being written. And we have to thank Roget for that.

The initial title Roget had chosen was “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition.”

Haha that is a really long title, right? Thankfully they had reduced it to just the first word and that is what the world uses till today.

Writers and readers alike are thankful to him for giving us a book like this; it helps us keep the flow while writing or reading and makes sure that no word goes without proper understanding. And that is why as a writer and a blogger, I will celebrate this day.

And I will always be thankful for the work of Peter Mark Roget in the thesaurus.
