It's Been A Dark Week!!!

This past week has to have been one of the darkest since the Indian Plane Crash. It’s sad for football fans all over the world, and doubly sad for Nigerian footballers as well. And then, it’s also sad for movie lovers. No matter how you look at it, no one came into this week expecting that some of our faves would not make it through to the weekend. Sadly, that’s just how life is.

You think you’ve got everything under control, you believe you know where your life is headed, and nothing can shock you. But then, life throws a curveball. It could be a terminal illness, or it could be a virus. Or it could just as well be death. And just like that, life has been turned upside down, and you’re reminded of just how fragile life is. It can be here today and gone tomorrow.

Of course, by now, you already have an idea of whom I’m talking about. It’s about the brothers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, who died this past week in a ghastly car accident. They’re both footballers who are steadily making their mark in the world, and just like that, life happened, and their life was cut short.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a football fan. Before this tragedy, I didn’t even know them. However, when it went viral and I learned their story, it broke my heart. Jota had only just secured some major wins for himself and his club, most notably of which was his marriage to his wife, which was only two weeks old. It was as if he was just about getting into his prime, ready to seize life for what it was. And the fatal crash happened.

And like I mentioned, Nigerians will be doubly sad about this because the football world was also hit with another death. And that’s the passing of Peter Rufai, a former goalkeeper for the Super Eagles of Nigeria. He was instrumental in helping us secure the World Cup in 1994 and has been regarded as a legend. He passed on at 61, and it was after a long battle with an illness.

It just seems to be a bad week for the football world all over, and I’m just glad that it’s finally over. Hopefully, the new week will bring better tidings, because more sad stories will only make the issues worse. I believe football has been hit with enough so far, and it would be heartbreaking to be hit by any more.

But then, I also mentioned that movie lovers were also mourning. And it wasn’t just the passing of Jota and his brother, or Peter Rufai, but also one of the major actors of our childhood. It was the Hollywood actor Julian McMahon. According to his bio, he was known more fondly for his role in the TV show, Nip/Tuck. However, I personally know him more for his role as Dr. Victor Von Doom in the Fantastic Four movies that were released in 2005 and 2007, respectively.

At just 56, he passed on. This brings to mind just how many Hollywood Actors have been lost this year alone. It’s quite sad when you think of it. But then, is there something that can be done about it? It’s not like death is something that can be fought or avoided. You can keep it at bay, but eventually, it comes for us all. And nothing can ever prepare us for that.

So you see, it’s been a pretty dark week for the world. And it’s no better considering how major areas of the world are still experiencing conflicts, massacres, and wars. People are dying every day, and we seem to be governed by sets of people who prefer personal vendettas to the Greater Good. I just don’t know where this world is headed. But I do know that those who have passed on won’t have to see the world get any worse than it already is.

May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Life in uncertain and death is an unwanted guest that can come any time. It doesn't has to do anything if you are in your prime or low. It's something we can't defeat. So, we can do nothing expect accepting the truth.
