This Is The Weekend Dilemma!

My weekends vary from week to week, how it’s gonna be for me is never really certain for me until I’m actually in it and see what it holds for me. Like everyone else, I would love to have little to do, sit back, and just have a good time, which is either relaxing with friends or Netflix and chilling on my own.

But then, as I said, my weekend varies. It can be due to work or also due to my mood. However, I’m always in total control of it and I only get to do what catches my fancy. That is why if the money is enticing enough, working even on weekends will catch my fancy as well.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

I make it a duty not to do it often so it doesn’t become a habit, because I know just how addictive working can be. It’ll be stressful and tiring, almost causing a brain drain for you. Yet, you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away from it. You’ll keep looking for more and more work to do, even when you don’t have to. Things like vacations and holidays will not mean much because you think you have to work so much.

Our excuse could be the mounting bills that never stop going higher, it could be what we choose to tell ourselves so we’ll keep showing up to work even when we’re supposed to just relax and enjoy ourselves. That’s why we have weekends as well, they’re like mini holidays and we’re not meant to miss out on them. And if Saturdays and Sundays don’t work for you, you can choose any other two days in the week to serve as your weekend.

There is no law at all stating that weekends must be Saturdays and Sundays, if you only have time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, then by all means let that be your weekend and you’ll do all the things you couldn’t do on Saturdays and Sundays.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

For me, I work every day, except Sundays and Mondays. Matter of fact, Fridays and Saturdays are usually my tightest because I always have so much to do and so little time to do them. It’s always frustrating. However, I always make sure that whatever I have to do is finished by the end of Saturday, so I’ll have the whole of Sunday free to myself. Because that, my friends, is the start of my weekend. And it ends by the time Monday draws to a close. Yay! And the cycle continues.

But then, there are days when clients would come with compelling offers, could be impromptu and I’ll have to turn up for them. Even on a Sunday. I always consider such jobs before taking them so it doesn’t affect my output in any way. But like I said before, if it’s something I could make time for, then you bet I’m going to jump right on it.

This doesn’t happen often, like maybe once a month or so, so it’s easy for me to keep it in check. If I were to be approached to work every Sunday as well, forfeiting my precious weekends for a nice sum of money, at this point, I don’t even know if I’d say no or yes. What does this mean? Am I addicted to it already?

I guess I’m not at that point where I can turn down a good proposal just yet, as long as it’s legit and bringing in the money, I can run it. No matter what day of the week it is. But when do I get to that point? I believe that getting there won’t be the problem. But would I even be able to notice when I get there? Will I be able to turn down a proposal from a client simply because I want to relax and enjoy my weekend? And even if I do notice it, will I be able to stop myself from taking on even more work?

One of my greatest fears is being stuck in this rat race, always working and making money that’s always running out so you end up working even more. The mere thought of it drains me of energy. And I hope that is not going to be the case for me.

Working and making money is highly addictive, and if we want to be in control, we need to start it now. Because when we make more money, it won’t get any easier. We need to make money, yeah! We need to pay the bills and take care of the family, yeah! But we also need to live and enjoy those things! What’s the point of paying bills you don’t get to enjoy? You pay for the heater in your house, but you’re always out in the cold hustling. You pay for cable, but you’re always on the internet looking for the next investment. As you spend the little you have, all you can think of is how to make more.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

This doesn’t look like an ideal life, but how can we avoid it? It’s not really about having money, it’s more about establishing yourself so you won’t be in constant fear of losing everything. Because what turns us into workaholics is the fear of going broke. We could be millionaires, but we’ll still rarely have time for ourselves or our families. We just want to keep bringing it in, until we just can’t stop ourselves.

We just have to exercise caution when chasing this bag. Making money is important, but enjoying the money is important as well. Because there’s nothing quite like spending your money on yourself, it’s a good feeling and can be therapeutic in a way. So, as you pay your bills, try to do things you like. Splurge once in a while and buy that snack that’s probably going to make you gain so much weight.

Life is too short to waste it hustling and piling money, only to end up not enjoying it. We deserve better.

All of us!

I agree with you on the fact that our weekend can be different, you can't compare the kind of job you do to that of a salary earner who has to resume by 8 and close by five. Saturday turns out to be their rest day unlike you with flexible time.

We all have different ideas/understandings about chasing the bag, I am the type who always runs after work until a time I fell very ill.

I met a young female doctor and we had this heart-to-heart conversation. That day, she asked me what would happen to the money I am chasing when my health is not okay to spend it. I thought about it deeply and realised that I was pushing my body to the extreme.

Motivational speakers will tell you to keep pushing but there is really a time to take a break to enjoy what you are working for. It's best to take those rest when needed than our body forcefully taking it from us.

As in... in the bid to provide the best life possible, we get stuck in providing and find it hard to actually enjoy the very things we provided. That's why we have weekends. We are meant to rest and at least eat some of our sweat and know that it tastes good. Because always working and working, and never reaping the benefits will make us hate what we're doing make it all seem like there's no point to it all.

Nothing is easy. We just have to be more careful about how we choose to live our live. That's what's most important.

It's true that financial stability is number one for a comfortable life, but it's also necessary to strike a balance. I know people who don't even rest up to 6 hours in 24hrs everyday all because there are chasing the bag.

The fear of going broke can indeed turn us into working so hard that we hardly find time to give ourselves the treats we deserve once in a while.

While I take chasing money seriousness, I don't go in the expense of trading my life for it. When we don't balance the equation effectively, it can lead to chronic stress and a lack of overall fulfillment.

It won't make sense to spend years gathering a huge amount of money, only for you to spend it all in the hospital for something that could easily have been avoided if you had only slowed down a little.
We don't have to be so serious all the damn time!

Exactly. If only so many people know this. I can't kill myself for anything in this life.

To be honest most of us running after money so badly that we forget to enjoy some time with relaxation. We are killing our weekend time for chasing thinking that after earning money we will get a chance to relax after earning a good amount of money and in the end such kinds of things don't happen. But little by little it creates damage mentally.

The funny thing is that the more we earn, the harder we work. We don't seem to have time for anything else because the money has taken over everything and it's all we know.
