Was I A Popular Kid?

Wow… another topic that takes us back in time. There is always a good reason to go down memory lane, and when it has to do with school, a smile will always be sure to come to our faces.

I wouldn’t say I was popular during secondary school, but then, I wasn’t invisible either. At least I’m certain all departments in my set knew me. And then, about fifty percent of our seniors knew me while another fifty percent of our juniors knew me as well. And by juniors, I mean SS2 students because at the time of graduation, I didn’t know a single SS1 student. And I don’t know if any of them knew me either. These figures are a rough estimate though, so it could be slightly more. Or slightly less.

So, what was I known for? Well, it was definitely not my book smarts. I wasn't the most intelligent in the class, not that I ever strived to be. I was only interested in making my grades and moving on to the next class. I tried my best to stay off the teacher’s radar because I didn’t want to be the “teacher’s friend”.

I didn’t like that role because it placed the eyes of said teacher would be on you, you’ll have no room to play and do silly things like sneak out of school or play football when you should be reading. Every time, you’ll be trying not to disappoint them. I couldn’t live with that pressure then, and can’t live with it now.

Also, I wasn’t known for any bad thing either. I sure as hell didn’t sneak out of school. It was too risky to dare because if you were caught it would be expulsion straight. Nah.

But then, one thing people did use to know me was when I was in SS2 and elected as the provost of Jet Club in my school. I hated it, because I was more or less the glorified alarm clock, going about the school every Wednesday and telling our members it was time for the meeting. Although, I was also in charge of discipline and keeping order during meetings. Well, this is the part where I would say I was really strict and unbiased in carrying out my job. But my Mummy said I should not tell lies, so I won’t say anything about that.

This role made students both in SS1 and SS3 know me very well. By now I was already on good terms with students of my set but in other departments as well. I attended a government school, you know how the population can be. Now do the math.

Apart from Jet Club though, if there is something else I was known for, it would probably be because of my guys. Back then, we went by many names, Backseat Boiz (because we loved to sit at the back, duh🙄), Supastarz (yeah, it sounds corny now, but this was years ago😅) and I can’t even remember the rest. We had the entire back of the class to ourselves and we called it Boiz Quaterz, no girl was allowed to sit there. Although we couldn’t stop them if they wanted to.

We didn’t really cause any trouble per se, we just enjoyed ourselves. Every week, we contributed money to cook. One of us cooked the food and brought it to school, during break all of us would take out spoons and eat! Sometimes we would just drink garri, with lots of groundnut, milk, and sugar. If you want to see different styles of eating, just make a bunch of teenagers eat from the same bowl. That’s when you’ll know that some of them were iron benders even before Toph knew what iron was. Some people are so skilled in the art of scooping or eating hot food that you’ll be so preoccupied with watching them that you won’t realize the food is vanishing right before your eyes. But then, by the time it happens to you once or twice, nobody will tell you to wise up and up your game.

This was only a slice of what we did back in school, and we were only in SS2. By the time we got to SS3 second term where we were already one step out of the school and doing nothing but waiting for WAEC to start… but let’s not get into all that now.

It’s now so long ago, but the memory of those days is still fresh. I’m still in contact with many of those guys, but we have grown way past titles like Supastarz and Backseat Boiz. Now, we are just men in the real world trying to get the bread and make something of ourselves. We’re getting there.

I once said on my blog that I enjoyed my secondary school education immensely, well, if you stay tuned, you’ll be getting every gist little by little.

Because as they say, “It’s plenty.

Hehehe I can relate with that back seat thing, it's what I also did back then in high school but my guys were always causing trouble though lols.

Eating in the same bowl will make one wiser lol, no one will teach you to step up your game 😃

Hehe... during our SS2 we did cause trouble, but in SS3 we buckled up. Fear of WAEC didn't allow us.
