Rural or Urban, where am I staying?

Omo, what can I say? I believe where I am staying is kind of a mix between both areas. Some sort of hybrid. It’s not really a rural area just as much as it's not really urban in that sense. Here, we have the best of both worlds packaged into one for us.

As I’ve mentioned before, I am currently in my school. And my school is located in Nekede, a town in Imo State. Now, while Nekede might be a town, it is made up of villages and it is in one of these villages that my school is housed.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

The presence of a federal institution brought growth and development to the area at an unprecedented level. Just the same way the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) did to Ihiagwa. The school brought in people from all over the country, creating business and investment opportunities for people living in the area.

As I said, it is a hybrid, having components of both rural and urban areas. One of the major problems of this place is the lack of infrastructure. Most of the good roads here are only the major roads that lead in and out of the town. Other roads connecting the villages are terrible, and the only other place you will see good roads is inside the school premises.

Then, lack of good hospitals. There is little or no reputable hospital in this area and that is bad. If a student were to fall ill, they either go to the school’s medical center or go to town. Most choose to go to town because it’s always faster than having to wait in the queue in the sickbay.

And one more major problem, the lack of job opportunities. As a student looking to get a side income while you study, it will be terribly hard for you to get a job. And if you manage to see one, the pay will be so poor you will just abandon the idea altogether. The options are severely limited, if you are not working as a POS agent or a sales representative, then you are not likely to get any form of employment.

And now, on the upside, you get some of the perks of being in the city. There are a lot of recreational spots like fast food, hotels, and the like where people can go and relax. For many of these things, you don’t have to go too far before you can have access to them.

Another awesome thing about this area is that no matter the skill you have, you will always find a customer. Many students come to school and learn one skill or the other, then they use it to establish themselves and open up a business. Others probably learned the skill before coming to the school and decided to make a living from it. The school environment is always favorable to people who choose to use their skills to make their lives better.

And more importantly, we don’t have to suffer the traffic issues that people in the city suffer as well. Here, getting a bus is easy and you will face almost no traffic on the road unless there was an accident or something. And if you choose, you can even decide to take a stroll, you’ll enjoy it without having to always look over your shoulders in case cars are coming from behind.

Personally, I believe the places we live in are not really much of a choice for us. We choose them based on other things we want for ourselves. Our location can be decided based on work, based on school, based on family… anyhow it is, the point is to be comfortable and live life as easily as possible.

For now, I am enjoying this place I am in. I don’t know what the future holds for me. Maybe when I graduate I would move to town, stay back here or retreat to the rural area. I have no idea for now.

I guess only time will tell.

Hybrid 🤔🤔!!! That's interesting. At see the captain I started to think what it can be. Are you going to tell us about any kind of seed or food. After reading now I can understand. But still, I think there need a good hospital in your area because it's very important.

The place where I live started as rural too but as time goes by, its transforming to a more urban one. Both have good and bad aspects but if its going to be a combination of both, what I want is for it to keep their good qualities while removing the bad ones.

Of course, that is the price of development. As it grows, more people will flock there for opportunities and as such the rate of crime and other vices will increase. There is only major crimes in places where things happen.

It is good to know that no matter the skill you have, customers will always be there. Job problem is the same in many places in Nigeria. If it is not a big town, then it's hard. We hope better things will come when you leave School
