1.64g Gold + Silver Japanese Tempo 2 Shu (1/8 Ryō)

You read that title right! This coin has both gold and silver in it! This unique coin hails from the 1800s, during the reign of Emperor Ninkō. This is a very unique coin not only because it's rectangular in shape, but also because of its composition. (Source)

Obverse
The front depicts the Emperor's crest at the very top, enclosed in a border. The characters below translate "2 Shu" to denote the currency.

Reverse
The back translates as "Mitsutsugu," which is the last name of the engraver, Shozaburo Mitsutsugu. (Source)

This coin is unique in its gold and silver composition. It is comprised of roughly 0.49g of gold and 1.15g of silver. Some call this combination "Electrum," even though Electrum is technically a naturally occurring combination, whereas this coin is intentionally designed this way. (Source)

Specifications
Purity: Unknown
Weight: 0.49g of gold and 1.15g of silver

I bought two of these from a user by the name of spatialsilver88 on Reddit. They have sales pop up every month or two, and they always have interesting pieces up for grabs. They go quickly, so you have to be fast! I paid $60 each for these. The cost wasn't a factor me as these are very cool and have great history. My boys will be happy they each get one and don't have to fight each other for one.

These Japanese coins are so tiny that you could easily lose them especially since Kimonos don't have pockets. Just one ...

Bless you.

Thanks! Even if you're not giving them to anyone, it's nice to have doubles in case you want to sell one at some point. 🙂

That actually doesn't seem like that bad of a price. I would have guessed it was a couple hundred per piece.

Yeah, it's actually quite affordable if you want a piece of history. The graded ones can easily surpass $200, but for now, these small pieces are affordable. The tricky part is just finding them. 🙂

Very cool! They have these all the time at the coin shop here, but cost usually prevents me from buying. But like you, I should bite the bullet and get one just for collectability sake.

I wondered if they were more prevalent there. That's awesome that they are! It's not often you find any precious metals coin from the 1800s that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah I know. I have some ishugin coins from the 1800s

and some mon from.. well, they are undated, but these were minted in the Edo era so anywhere from 1603 to 1868.

But I don't have many of these pre-modern coins because of price.

Edit: I forgot. One of those mon is a bunsen from 1668 to 1684. That may be the oldest coin I own.

I probably could. The pawn shop down the road has one and they've let me do it for free before.
