My Silver Toning Experiment / Reblog lottery

For those who don't know, silver not kept in a dry, enclosed environment will tarnish over time. The biggest culprit is sulfur. There are trace amounts of sulfur in paper products, ink, eggs, onions, hairspray, shampoo, etc. While the tarnishing doesn't damage the silver and can be cleaned off, it does discolor the silver. In some cases, this can be a desirable effect.

In the bullion and coin world, there is a market for beautifully toned (tarnished) coins, bars, rounds, etc. These can sometimes sell for multiples over their spot value when not artificially induced with liver of sulfur. The color of toning can vary from brown, orange and red, all the way to blue, purple, green and black.

The 1 gram Geiger square pictured above toned from being in a cardboard box for a year or so, in with papers, air tites, gloves, etc. I decided to try and recreate this, this time deliberately, in my garage.

I put two 1980s Libertads, a 1921 Morgan, random year date Panda, 1oz Pyromet card and 1oz Dark Side "The Liberator" round in a cardboard box to be toned. I threw in a small leather pouch, polishing cloth, and some wadded up gun magazine ads. The idea is that each of these give off different levels of sulfur that will tone the coins.

They've been in there probably a year now. While they're coming along, they're not quite to the stage I'd like, where you can see some blue, green and purple.

The Panda has a nice, even bronze toned rim due to me keeping it in half of the air tite. Very cool!

The 1921 Morgan has hints of orange and yellow and some very faint blue toning starting.

One of the Libertads is toning much slower than everything else. The other, however, is developing a lot of orange.

They're far from where I'd like them to be, but this is for fun (and science!) more than anything else. We'll see what these look like in another 3-4 months. 😁

Each month, I give away a $1 Goldback or 4 HBD. The winner gets to choose.
Note: Some countries may have prohibitively expensive shipping or delivery, which may not be feasible. I reserve the right to award the winner 4 HBD instead of a Goldback at my discretion.

Not sure what a goldback is? Click here to find out more about them.

How The Reblog Lottery Works

  1. Follow me. (If you're not a follower, you won't be entered into the drawing)
  2. Look for "Reblog lottery" in any of my post titles.
Make sure it's for the current contest month, and is 6 days old or less, and click "Reblog".
(Reblogging an older post will not get you an entry)
  3. An upvote is appreciated but not required, and does not give you additional entries.
  4. You'll get one entry for each qualifying article you reblog this way.
  5. At the end of the month I'll enter your name into the drawing and pick a winner at random.
Note: Bots are not eligible to win

Oh, sorry. I see other people doing it to their posts all the time. I didn't realize that was frowned upon.

Interesting concept. So far it seems that they've picked up a lot of yellow toning, especially the Libertad. I wonder why the Mexican round is progressing faster than the others?

I forgot to mention that the Libertad that is toning faster was in an air tite container with chopped up onions for about 8 hours before I put it in the box with the rest. There wasn't much toning from that part, but it likely sped up the process.

How long do you intend to continue this experiment?

I plan to likely let it keep going another year unless I get the colors I want before then

My china cabinet seems to tone the silver I keep in it. The cabinet is mostly particle board and I can't explain where the hydrogen sulfide came from.

Most wood products and the chemicals used in particle board "off gas" and will tone silver. I had a silver goblet that would tone just sitting inside a solid oak cabinet.

That's very interesting to read. I had no idea this was a thing. It looks cool and I'm curious to find out how they look in a next update. I have to admit that I know little about chemistry (I assume it's part of that lol) and how certain things affect materials such as this... I bet my boyfriend would say, yeah of course it does lol. This little Noob is going to reblog it and follow your progress :)

Testing if the tipping works: !BBH (sorry if it doesn't lol then I need to have more or stake them)

Thanks! Yeah, it's a very interesting process.

The tip came through perfectly! Thanks! 😁

Yes, I noticed. Now I know it doesn't have to be staked. At least that adds another tipping possibility to the mix as the PIMP tips run out so fast, lol. Have a good weekend!

Yes, and if you hold 5000 BBH, you can tip 5x per day and get a small swap.hive drip. You have a good weekend too!

I assumed the tipping would be more but didn't know about the Hive drip. I will add a bit more as they are cheap anyway. Thank you for the TIPs :)

I tried to swap a bit of HBD into Hive but the market is not working for me. Not even when I switch nodes. Any idea if I can do that somewhere else? Swap HBD for Hive I mean?

Ecency will let you do it, but it takes a few days. How much HBD were you trying to convert to Hive?

Do you mean converting it? I never used that option. I mean the market instant swap. It's just a little 1.608 HBD as that's what I had liquid.. I would like to get to that 5 tips asap so I can spread some more positivity with all the engagement.

That worked very smooth. Thank you so much I never knew @ecency had that option!
