Next-Level Jewelry: Gold Quartz

While traveling along the port cities in Alaska where the cruise ships dock, you'll find numerous jewelery stores. They have your standard jewelry, but they also have unique pieces in jade, ivory, ruby, sapphire, opal, diamond and... quartz. Specifically, gold quartz.

Some of the gold found mining is embedded in quartz in veins. While a lot of it isn't anything special and the gold is simply extracted, there are some rare varieties where gold is embedded in almost pure white quartz. This is what they call "quartz gold" and it's highly sought after by jewelers.

It's not cheap, which means there are a lot of fakes. Sometimes it's only gold leaf and epoxy. Other times it's quartz, but it's man-made and infused with gold to give it that same look. I saw a lot of advertisements for a company called Orocal, who pride themselves on authentic quartz gold and gold nugget jewelery. If you're planning to buy it, you want to take your time and do your research. It's not cheap, but if you're looking for something beautiful and unique, this is a heck of a way to make a statement!

I remember buying my roommate a Northern Lights Topaz pendant as her birthday gift from a jewelry shop in Juneau.

The Northern Lights Topaz is beautiful! Excellent choice!

I was tempted to buy a gold nugget ring with a blue diamond in the center, but the price was a bit too much.

That is pretty cool looking. My sister and her husband just got back from an Alaskan cruise. As much as I don't want to go on a cruise, I wouldn't mind visiting Alaska one day.

When I first saw what they did, I was amazed at how cool it looked. My wife and I agreed we would go back, but we'd fly out and plan our own trip. There's a lot to do, and a cruise is nice but limits how much you can do in a day in each port.

That makes sense. Cruise ships just feel like a giant petrie dish to me.

You have to be a smart shopper! I love to collect nuggets with some quartz still attached and even white quartz gold ore with a lot of gold in them. The ones I've picked up are always raw though, and would be very hard to fake. Jewelry on the other hand has a lot of dishonest actors out there, way too many scammers!

Never taken a cruise up the Alaskan coast, interesting that there are so many jewelers selling white quartz with gold.

Yeah, it's hard with all of the fake jewelry out there. You're better off going with known brands to avoid being ripped off.
