Some Packaging Designers Are Morons

I understand the need to minimize the cost of packaging in order to maximize profit. At what point does doing that make the packaging pretty much unusable to the consumer?

I bought some peppermint bark at Costo a couple of weeks ago. I cracked it open. It had a pull tab that then removed a section of plastic lining the entire outer edge. The only problem is that to close it you have to hold the lid down and squeeze the lip between your index finger and thumb to reseal it, and rotate it as you go.

That's great and all, but it's time-consuming and obnoxious. So, into a Ziploc bag they go! Simple and cost-effective, unlike the garbage this product designer came up with.

Now my peppermint bark is easily accessible and easy to put away!

I remember back when I was in school there was only one university in the state that offered the major of "packaging engineering". Everyone was dead set on going there with that as their major because they figured there would be huge demand for it.

Some packaging is great, but the majority of what I find is just absolute garbage.

I'm sure there's demand for it, but the results are terrible.

It's true, I guess not everyone can afford to package stuff like Apple and Google.

Stupid packaging abounds.

I remember learning from someone who worked as a buyer for a "big box store" that most packaging is designed with the retailer and merchandizing in mind, NOT with the consumer in mind. Hence all those stupid clamshell you-need-a-stick-of-dynamite-to-break-into things the size of a football pitch... each containing a couple of batteries, or lip balm, or something else tiny...

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, the clamshells are the worst. I'm always cutting myself on that stuff.

Couldn't agree more, those containers suck. You're better off putting it all in a ziploc and keeping in there. Profit is everything to these big corporations...

Right? Heaven forbid they put it in a basic plastic tub and just seal it with tape and slap a label on it.

Most of containers are made to make the product look bigger more than anything !

That's a good point. All of the extra plastic made it seem like you were getting a lot. Then when you put it in the bag it doesn't look like nearly as much.
