The Hidden Danger of Allowing Phones in Schools
The worst mistake that can be made is allowing students to use phones in school.
Most humans are prisoners of their mobile phones. We are so addicted to them that once we have them with us, we cannot just do without pressing them because there are a lot of things to explore on them.
One of the biggest disadvantages is social media. When a student has their mobile phone with them during school hours, they can easily get distracted by messages from their friends. When they get bored, they can easily turn to their phone to kill the boredom.
We have seen the result in tertiary institutions where phones are allowed. Lecturers will be teaching, and some students will be pressing their phones. Some will even use earpieces, and sometimes I wonder what they are doing in the class if they did not come to learn. Probably just around to sign the attendance sheet because that is more important to them than paying attention to the lecturer.
Now, imagine if adults can behave that way. What should we expect from teenagers in secondary school and children in primary school?
Most importantly, there is the issue of students relying on their phones to provide answers to things they should be able to solve with their own brains.
Nobody likes taking the long route when there is an easier option. If students know they can simply ask AI for an answer instead of thinking through a problem themselves, many of them will naturally choose the easier option.
That could be one of the biggest disadvantages of allowing phones in schools. Our children could gradually become dependent on AI for their schoolwork rather than developing the ability to think, reason, research, and solve problems on their own.
AI is a powerful tool, but if we introduce it to children without teaching them how to think independently first, we may end up raising a generation that knows how to get answers but does not know how to find those answers themselves.
Allowing phones to be used in school will only make some students less interested in their education because there is always something to do on the phone. If you are not replying to messages, you will have your favourite games on it. If it is not a game, it could be watching movies, scrolling through reels, or doing something else.
There is always something to do.
So, for the sake of the future of our children, I strongly believe phones should be banned during school hours.

It will be of a great disadvantage truly cos shortcuts are always enticing rather than passing the normal route. Knowledge will be difficult in having as there will be full reliance on phones and use of AI

STOPWell, different strokes for different folks. As much as phones can distract people, a complete ban on phones may lead to collateral damage to skills. What happens is that while other students are developing skillfully and evolving, others without such opportunity will be kind of laid back, technology-wise. This is because the knowledge they share during school hours would not wait till they get home. Some opportunities, learnings, and skills are time-bound. Cheers!

And if you think that will stop them from developing skills, those who were given access to phones during school hours, what skills have they use it to develop? They would prefer chatting with friends and games than learn on their own, infact most students are not designed to learn on their own...
And your point is valid, just that it is already been taking care of, we have computer studies in school and during that time, they can learn skills with the school laptop... Mobile is a distraction...
I agree phones shouldn't be aĺlowed during school hours just the same way it is not allowed in factories during working and production hours.
I said they can be allowed access to the phone during extra lessons.
However for schools that already made that provision through the use of laptops and CBTs, that's cool.
All learning isn't learning oo until the child can independently prove that skill.

For kids and teenagers, it's not ok to use a smartphone in school, as they don't understand the importance of their choices, but when it comes to university, I think it's quite ok. I never wanted to only stick ot the boring lectures of the lecturers. I used my time securing several things at the same time. It never impacted my study also, and I secured my top position till my graduation and post graduation. I am not sure if it's the same for others or not.
Well you are one among those who still take their studies serious, most people in the university pressing phone during class have no interest in education, they just want the certificate...
