Life Is Short… More Than We Realize

Sometimes I sit and wonder if I will live to see the year 2100. If I do, I will be well over 100 years old.

Why did that thought cross my mind?

Well, I was scrolling through Facebook today when I saw a familiar name in the People You May Know section. I opened the profile and discovered that both of the person’s parents had passed away, one in 2021 and the other in 2024.

I knew both of them while growing up.

It hit me that many of my parents’ friends and our old neighbours from my childhood are no longer alive. People who once looked permanent are now just memories.

Moments like this remind me that life is incredibly short. We are only here for a brief moment, even though it doesn’t always feel that way.

As children, there were things we never understood but now make perfect sense.

For example, we would see elderly men working as security guards or doing other petty jobs and wonder, Don’t they have children to take care of them?

Now I realize life isn’t always that simple.

Those men probably worked hard. They probably made sacrifices, chased dreams, and did their best. Yet life still didn’t turn out the way they hoped.

And their children? They may be somewhere fighting battles of their own, struggling just to survive, with little or nothing left to give.

Life is unpredictable.

That is why we should be slow to judge and quick to show compassion. We rarely know the full story behind someone’s situation.

Yes, some people are living with the consequences of choices they made years ago.

But for many others, they are carrying burdens they never chose, circumstances beyond their control.

A little kindness costs nothing, yet it can mean everything to someone fighting a battle we know nothing about.
