Should you buy a dog from a breeder or adopt from a shelter?

In this post I would like to give my opinion on this topic. This question comes up a lot when people want to get a dog, and there are numerous posts about it on the internet, but in my experience, we still need to emphasize some things about this choice.
I'm comitted to adoption, I already adopted two dogs and all my partner's dogs were adopted too. Here is Nelson, my current dog:

He is a very high energy dog, needs a lot of exercise and training. I am his 4th owner and he is barely older than 1 year. Before me, no one taught him anything, he did not know how to listen to people or how to live with them in harmony. This can cause a lot of problems, such as separation related disorders and other behavioral issues. Nelson has problems staying home alone as you can see on my door:

Resolving these issues takes a lot of time and almost always requires a professional trainer experienced in behavioral issues. So it1s not always sunshine and happiness with adopetd dogs, you should choose carefully and know yourself and what you are capable of. Of course my example does not mean that all adopted dogs have problems, but be prepared.

If you buy a dog from a responsible breeder you get a dog who is healthy with a stable nervous system, and was properly raised by his mother. At least this should be the case if you choose a respectable breeder who has properly registered dogswith all the screening tests. These dogs can cost a lot.
The initial price of the dog should not be a concern!!!
If you are nott willing to pay the price for a proper registered dog from a respectable breeder than think again. You will pay way more during the lifespan of the dog. The purchase price is nothing compared to that. People often buy cheaper dogs from non-responsible breeders, but in the end they pay 10x more at the vet or trainers, because these dogs often have unstable nervous system and health issues. Or they just leave them on the side of a road or in better cases, drop them in a shelter...
Do your research about the breeders. If the dogs are suspiciously cheap, you can get them younger than 8 weeks old, you can not see their parents or they don't show you where the puppies grow up for example, and they sell them without proper registration, walk away.

Doesn’t really matter where you get the dog from. What matters is how you take care of the dog. And love it,feed it, provide and care for the dog

You are absolutely right. I just wanted to highlight some things about getting a dog. Considering these things before you make the decision can help you and your future dog to have a better relationship from the start by avoidig the "this is not what I wanted" situations.

Yeah.. but then there’s every possibility that you can get a dog from a shelter or any where else and still not get what you’re looking for.. I think where ever you go just let your heart and the universe decide for you

Both my dogs are adopted too, as adults, history mostly unknown. It's hard to say what is best. If animals are bred for money, there will always be irresponsible breeders. Adopting a puppy would be my next choice but that can be pretty hard too. sigh.

The puppy vs. adult dog question also worth its own post, there is a lot to consider. IMO getting a puppy is a high risk high reward situation. A lot can go wrong, but if its not the case, then you get a relationship with your dog that makes life together easy.

Some people should not get a dog from anywhere, because they either cannot (unable to) or do not want to take care of their dogs responsibly. There are many stray dogs on the streets, and a lot of dog shelters are full.

I aggree, before getting a dog, people should think really hard about what they want, and what they are capable of, but they are rarely honest to themselves, which leads to a lot of abandoned dogs. In my country (Hungary) all the shelters are always full (there is a breedin problem too, people often don't neuter their dogs).

Jelenleg rajtunk kívül egy aktív magyarról tudok. @schiba.

I would definitely take a dog from a shelter. Besides giving a chance to a dog who has been raised in difficult conditions, I wouldn't encourage the dog traders who usually raise dogs to let/ program them to reprouce and then sell them,

I agree with you, I promote adoption to everyone whenever I can. However, it may be not suitable for everyone, and we should not forget that responsible breeders are the ones who maintain the genetic pool of purebred dogs, and they are really needed for example as working dogs (malinois, border collie, greyhounds, labrador etc.).

I don't know if it is that ethical to engage dogs in working...there is no truly consent from their part, just to perform people's interest. Not saying that some working jobs really put them in danger...
