Finding A Balance Between Community Services And Students Educational Progress
During my secondary school days, every Thursday is for vocational and practical education where students are divided into different sections where they are taught how to cook, make cloths and do a lot physical learning.
Hence, an idea of students being required to perform community Services before their graduation is not bad at all but where my opinion will defer is making it compulsory or they can risk forfeiture of their graduation.
Community services are a way of giving back to the society, a voluntary way of impacting lives in society without seeking for a financial reward thereafter. It involves services like sweeping the market, and public places. Visiting the elderly homes and helping them with chores, giving them food and personal effects, coaching children and sensitizing the citizens on government policies and environmental health hazards.
The brain behind community service is to help students build personal relationships in the environment, develop and build empathy, socialise and make positive impact in society from the things they have learnt from school.
However, the idea of making it compulsory will create frustration while making the idea to loose its value. This is because, some students might not want to partake in such activities since there are clubs in schools that is already doing that. They go out and engage in community services, visit the elderly homes with gift items and even control traffic some times. At the point of gaining admission, students are allowed to join different clubs. Each club have their goals, vision and mission. So, asking students to engage in a compulsory community service as a requirement for graduation will be a repetitive function since some students might have joined the club while schooling.
My suggestion will be finding a balance between the two where students will not suffer educational growth or even be carrying out such function with resentment, bitterness and agony because it is against their wish. Imagine a situation where a student is attending to an elderly person with such resentment causing bodily harm and spoiling things that they are supposed to take care of because they were forced against their will versus where they are allowed to willingly render such services on the basis that it will attract rewards and state recognition on their certificate during graduation.
Furthermore, I strongly believe that the later will thrive because humans tend to tilt towards incentives such as rewards and recognitions than when they are being coerced. Again, since we are discussing students, Such requirements for students at secondary school level might not really be okay because majority of them at that point is still below 18 years and as minors, it might not be healthy to expose them to such activities to avoid contaminations or health challenges that may arise from such exposure. However, under the tutelage of their guidance at school, they can be asked to do voluntary donations with which the school can support those activities in proxy,.(through bodies that render such services such as the red cross, boys and girls scout).
So, conclusively, such idea for me is top notch, to build and impact the society positively but tweaking it in a way to encourage rather than destroy, progress education rather than hinder it, secure the future generational leaders and leadership skills rather than erase their values will be the best. This will go a long way in striking a balance between making the community service a monster that stops students from graduating and receiving their certificates after 6 solid years of academic pursuit.
Tweaking the community service requirement for students from secondary school upwards as a free-will activity that will attract rewards and state recognition during graduation will be a bait that will catch the low, high and mighty. At the end, we are not building students that will pass through schools only, but those that will also give back to the society empathise and see the realities of life in the environment while preparing as a future leader. After all, nobody knows the womb that will give birth to a king.
