"MIEDO": ¿Padecerlo o enfrentarlo?// "FEAR": To suffer it or to face it?

"You have to face your own fears." Have you ever found yourself faced with this interesting proposition? Surely yes, and the fact is that all of us at some time or in a certain situation of our life will be faced with this option that does not seem to be as fair as we want, since in most cases our fear becomes as great as the fact of not knowing what to do when faced with such an approach.

Perhaps one of the most uncomfortable sensations that we can experience during our existence is born precisely from this feeling, one that seems to sound the alarms in warning to something that is happening or probably can happen. We will never feel fear for something that has already happened, but the truth is that fear itself seems to have a memory and that is why, when we experience a situation related to our past, fear comes to the surface with even more intensity than we can remember.

Is fear a synonym of cowardice? Of course not, despite the fact that many of us can be categorized as "fearful" in some areas of life. Rather, this feeling becomes the first counselor when faced with a danger, a risky action or a certain difficulty in which our physical, mental or emotional integrity could be affected. It is one thing to "be fearful" and quite another to "feel fear" and that is something that, the clearer we are about it, the better our understanding will be when it comes to handling it.

Probably one of the things that prevents us from better understanding fear is the misconception we may learn about it in our early stages of life. Sometimes, we fall into the error of using this feeling as a tool to limit the actions of others or to instill doubts that come to condition possible decisions. For example, sometimes adults choose to sow fear in children in order to make them obey some rule or discipline, and although there are those who enjoy this, the truth is that there is nothing teaching behind such action.

In my case, during my childhood I remember that in my uncle's farm there was a room where they kept the work tools. I, with that curiosity that characterizes every child, always wondered what could be there and why it was always closed, but instead of explaining me with the truth, what they did was to instill fear in me by saying that there was a mysterious man who could hurt me and for that reason I should not go near that place. Sometimes they would suddenly turn off the light when they saw me loitering nearby, which obviously caused me a lot of fear and dread.

Now as an adult, reflecting on this, I ask myself, wasn't it easier to explain myself with the truth instead of inventing all those things? For my age it would have been better to understand that that room was always locked because of the dangerous tools that were kept there, than to have to think about why a man was locked in that room, why he would get upset if a child came in there and what his real motive would be to hurt me. From all this, my conclusion is that it is always better to speak truthfully than to instill a lie based on our feelings.

An important factor that we must always keep in mind is to know how we react when we feel fear. It is impressive to see how in a common situation, many are paralyzed by fear, others respond spontaneously and some simply run away from what causes them this uncomfortable feeling. Therefore, when facing our fears, it is not only a matter of knowing what causes them, but also how we react to them. In strategic terms we could say that we must know our opponent in order to find the best possible defense.

In a recent post by our great friend @mafalda she highlights the importance of "managing our emotions", and how applicable this can be with a feeling like fear. For this, a tool that is within everyone's reach is our brain, which is able to identify the sources that generate this feeling in us and how we can address it successfully. If we achieve a good connection between our mind and our emotions, we will be closer to showing a good posture in the face of fear.

How good can it be to feel fear, and can we take something positive from this feeling? It is amazing what many have come to discover about themselves when experiencing fear, as they have found encouragement and courage they may never have had before in their lives. By facing our fears we can bring out the best in ourselves, and that is something that when applied allows us to have a better perspective in our lives, we come to feel freer to develop skills or virtues that could be entangled in the face of a misdirected fear.

We must also be careful with the information we give to our brain in order to cultivate an unnecessary fear either through movies, stories or stories that are focused on feeding that feeling in us. Sometimes this is presented as fun and attractive, but the truth is that consciously or not, we are giving space to a fear that does not provide anything good to our emotional well-being.

After all that has been said and always from my point of view, I think that the feeling of fear can teach us more than we can imagine. It is not about living without fear, it is about accepting and managing this feeling in a way that allows us to continue growing in every aspect of our lives.

Saludos y bendiciones amigo
