Por tiempo limitado // For a limited time

Lately, the weather in the mornings has been quite changeable. Some days the sun shines as brightly as can be, while on others the day starts out quite cloudy and even with fairly heavy rain. Because of those cold, rainy mornings, there are days when I wake up with mild allergy symptoms, and sometimes I have to rub a little menthol on my skin so that the discomfort gradually goes away. Since I have to walk to work, I sometimes carry the menthol in my hand because I know it’s what can help me with that uncomfortable discomfort. A couple of days ago, right halfway there, I suddenly felt like I’d forgotten something… it was the menthol. But I forgot it because, strangely enough, my allergies didn’t act up even though it was raining.

It was as if my mind had conditioned my morning routine, except that in this case it didn’t matter so much that I’d forgotten it because I didn’t really need it. In fact, for a moment I hesitated and thought: Should I go back home to get the menthol just in case? What if I have an allergic reaction later? It’s amazing because I didn’t feel sick, but I was still thinking based on a discomfort I didn’t have. Throughout the day I kept an eye out, but the allergy never showed up, and late at night I started reflecting a bit on what happens to many people every day—the fact that they’re constantly on the lookout for a certain medication or specific treatment. It strikes me as remarkable how so many people are conditioned to take not just one or two, but sometimes even more medications just to function and lead a relatively normal life.

I know a woman who has to take eight pills a day. From the moment she told me, I thought there must be days when she feels stressed or overwhelmed by everything that entails. Just imagine what it must be like to have to pay for all those medications! And on top of that, she has to keep track of the times she needs to take them—some before meals and others after—and make sure not to mix up the doses. She told me she has them written down and set reminders on her phone, and as for the expenses, her children make sure everything is up to date so she can have peace of mind and keep track of them. I was thinking about how tedious even a simple allergy is for me in the mornings, while someone else is dealing with a similar situation—but multiplied by eight.

What must life be like for those who have to live under the burden of treatment? If we take it a step further, we might even wonder what life would be like for those people if they were free from this. It’s hard for any of us to go for a period of time without getting sick or experiencing some kind of discomfort, but to live with it? There are people who, from a very young age, have to carry this burden for the rest of their lives—which in itself reveals a side of someone who hides the best version of themselves. It can also happen that you meet someone and, after some time, see them again—only to find they’re now dependent on treatment or medication to maintain good health. That’s when we come to appreciate the effort anyone makes to take care of themselves, and at the same time, it leads us to reflect on our own health: how we’d handle it if we were in their shoes, and just how much we’re doing to preserve the well-being we currently enjoy.

How different life would be if we were all on equal footing and not at a disadvantage! And I’m referring to who we are and who we can’t be as long as poor health continues to dictate so much of our lives. I commend those people who, even so, strive to be their best selves—without bitterness and with a truly exemplary attitude. I know that each person faces their own battle with an illness or ailment that’s completely different from anyone else’s, but even so, each person, from their very core, can hold themselves up—not just endure, but learn to cope with everything—and never let these things define who we are in life.
