A Novel with a Dark Tinge: The Tunnel by Enersto Sabato| A Literary Classic [ESP/ING]

Por primera vez vengo a hablarles de una nóvela argentina, una referencia de la literatura hispanoamericana y que leí hace unos años; pero que nuevamente volví a retomar hace un par de días; una nóvela que juega con muchos aspectos psicológicos y que principalmente envuelve una tragedia oscura.

For the first time I come to talk to you about an Argentinean novel, a reference of Spanish-American literature that I read some years ago, but that I picked up again a couple of days ago; a novel that plays with many psychological aspects and that mainly involves a dark tragedy.

El Túnel es narrado por la voz del protagonista (Juan Pablo Castel), un pintor que se descifra así mismo como incomprendido; en una exhibición de sus cuadros conoce a María Iribarne, una mujer un poco complicada y llena de libertad… Castel llega a creer que solo ella puede comprenderlo, entablando una relación apasionada con ella y obsesionándose un poco. Cuando descubre que María en realidad está casada y ha tenido una colección de amantes; se siente solo una pieza más y decide asesinarla. Así que en esta historia el decide contar como lo hizo y porque.

Esta nóvela en su momento me resulto un poco complicada de leer pero ahora puedo sentir que entiendo más el camino que toma; es más bien como un juego mental en donde nos ponemos bajo la piel de un pintor con obvios problemas psicológicos y de ira; problemas que lo hacen odiar al resto del mundo menos a nuestra protagonista (María Iribarne), al menos por un tiempo determinado.

El Túnel is narrated by the voice of the protagonist (Juan Pablo Castel), a painter who describes himself as misunderstood; in an exhibition of his paintings he meets María Iribarne, a woman a bit complicated and full of freedom... Castel comes to believe that only she can understand him, entering into a passionate relationship with her and becoming a bit obsessed. When he discovers that Maria is actually married and has had a collection of lovers; he feels like just another piece of work and decides to murder her. So in this story he decides to tell how he did it and why.

This novel at the time I found it a bit complicated to read but now I can feel that I understand more the path it takes; it is more like a mental game where we get under the skin of a painter with obvious psychological problems and anger; problems that make him hate the rest of the world except our protagonist (Maria Iribarne), at least for a certain time.

Es una lectura muy interesante, atrapante y al mismo tiempo bastante dinámica; en definitiva una nóvela que necesita de madurez para comprender y poder asimilarla. Los personajes me parecen muy bien estructurados y debo decir que Castel es uno de estos personajes que traspasan la lectura y te dan escalofríos.

Si hablamos del contexto histórico, siento que esta es una historia que quizá pudo revolucionar, puesto que esta novela salió por primera vez en 1948; con una sociedad muy diferente a la que tenemos hoy; definitivamente una obra que se adelantó en su espacio histórico/social y eso sin duda marco un precedente en la literatura la Latinoamérica.

Me gusta mucho el recurso en el que el autor se ingenia para buscar que el título de este libro tenga sentido; sobre todo el final, donde el narrador (Juan Pablo) expresa el amor que sintió como un túnel oscuro que nunca más sería comprendido así como la vida misma.

It is a very interesting reading, catching and at the same time quite dynamic; in short, a novel that needs maturity to understand and be able to assimilate it. The characters seem to me very well structured and I must say that Castel is one of those characters that go through the reading and give you chills.

If we talk about the historical context, I feel that this is a story that perhaps could have revolutionized, since this novel came out for the first time in 1948; with a very different society than the one we have today; definitely a work that was ahead in its historical/social space and that undoubtedly set a precedent in Latin American literature.

I really like the resource that the author uses to make the title of this book make sense; especially the end, where the narrator (Juan Pablo) expresses the love he felt as a dark tunnel that would never be understood again as well as life itself.

Para mí toda esta nóvela, junto con sus personajes construyen el túnel donde se desenvuelven los acontecimientos; acabando en destrucción para los personajes principales. Juan Pablo Castel termino en la cárcel por su crimen, María Iribarne acaba muerta en manos de uno de los hombres de su vida y Allende (Esposo de María) termina con su vida voluntariamente.

Esta nóvela para mí es una interesante propuesta de lo que son las emociones y hasta donde nos hacen llegar como seres humanos; incluso el personaje de Castel aunque bien con problemas psicológicos claramente, es un ejemplo perfecto de la susceptibilidad de la mente humana.

El Túnel es una excelente nóvela desde mi punto de vista, te adentra en un mundo un poco oscuro y en lógicas llenas de odio; pero no cae en lo grotesco o exagerado. Me gusta mucho el juego psicológico pero esto es mucho un estilo personal, sin duda alguna merece el puesto que ha llevado por años dentro de la literatura.

For me, this entire novel, along with its characters, builds the tunnel where the events unfold; ending in destruction for the main characters. Juan Pablo Castel ends up in jail for his crime, Maria Iribarne ends up dead in the hands of one of the men in her life and Allende (Maria's husband) ends his life voluntarily.

This novel for me is an interesting proposal of what emotions are and how far they make us go as human beings; even Castel's character, although clearly with psychological problems, is a perfect example of the susceptibility of the human mind.

The Tunnel is an excellent novel from my point of view, it takes you into a world a bit dark and full of hateful logics; but it doesn't fall into the grotesque or exaggerated. I really like the psychological game but this is very much a personal style, without a doubt it deserves the position it has held for years within literature.
