Germany starts burning coal again

Russia has cut the flow of gas in it's pipelines to Germany by 60%. This is designed to prevent Germany from filling it's gas storage units before winter.

Germany has responded by firing up it's coal electricity power plants. The idea is that instead of burning gas to generate electricity, any gas they receive goes straight to storage for winter heating. Their gas storage units are 56% full, and they are aiming for 80% by October.

Even if the Russians cut off the gas to Germany completely, there are gas pipelines going into Germany from the rest of Europe. So they could receive LNG from Britain and France that has been re-gassified before being put in pipelines. It's more expensive than Russian gas, but better than the other option, which is rationing the energy industry uses.

Meanwhile everyone is praying for a mild winter.
