How important is crypto for digital nomads

Today I got very frustrated about the online work platforms and systems for getting paid. Which led me again to why is beneficial for all of us to use crypto to exchange value and how much I wish things will speed up in this context.

For those who doesn't know me, I'm Capitana Beach. A traveler soul from Spain who likes to move and live in different countries to explore the best beaches. Currently I am living in Indonesia.

In the past couple of years I have been making money online offering my services as a writer and translator ENG-ESP. Mostly I have been using Upwork, but since I don't like this platform much lately and is not giving me good results, I have been in the adventure of looking for other online sources on online income.

Today I went to register in another freelancer platforms and my application got rejected because of a mismatch in the location. Despite I am in Indonesia I was registering as if I was in Spain since I realized that in Upwork I couldn't apply to Spanish speaking offers because the clients were putting as mandatory requirement to live in Spain. I think they do this when they want to hire people from Spain instead of South America so they don't get that many applications.

Anyways even if I use the VPN they figure this out (probably because in the beginning I was not using it) and declined my application. Now I have to wait 3 months to apply again. Fine.

So I went to Hotmart to set up my bank account to get the money that I made selling my first online course. They asked me to verify my identity and again I had problems to do so, because they need a proof of address. Which is a bill of water, electricity, phone, rental contract or similar. I don't have that since I don't live any longer in Spain and here I am renting a room in a guest house where there is no contract. Also the SIM is prepaid so no luck on this.

And I wonder. Why do I need all this? In a world that every time is becoming more and more global and where we offer our services online to clients all over the world, does it make any sense that I need to prove where I live to get paid? And if I am going to deliver the work with the same quality and time frame, what does it matter if I do it from Spain or Indonesia?

What I see is that as humans we are moving forward very quickly to a more global economy but the current financial system is not moving as fast. Ideally crypto is a perfect solution for it, because we need to have this. An exchange system that does not depends on governments. A form of getting paid without so much absurd verification.

And at the same time with everything that is happening in the crypto space, are we really going to get there?

To conclude this article I just would like to ask a couple of things:

  1. Do you know about any platform for freelancers where you get paid in crypto? (that actually is working because in my past I checked a few and I didn't see much job offers there).
  2. Is there any platform for online courses where you get paid in crypto?

I hope that you have enjoyed this reflection and I am looking forward to listening to your suggestions/opinions :)

Interesting article, very concise but eloquent and wonderfully written... Pleasant to read and dealing about a issue on which we are all always reflecting... How long will certain limitations and requirements continue in such a globalised world?... I think we are on the way (albeit a little slow) to these obstacles ceasing to occur....

I've obtained most freelance gigs on Twitter and Discord communities. But I know of crypto.jobs, cryptojobslist, Blockchain Headhunter. You can stream lessons on vimm.tv, a HIVE-based streaming platform and charge for the lesson.

Where I work, we're sometimes requested to add captions in Spanish on English videos. If that's something that interests you, I could drop you a line next time we need captions and see if it's something you would enjoy doing :)
