Ámsterdam | Film review [ESP - ENG]

Vaya que la vida trae sorpresas, así como la que me llevé al ver esta película, está entre las mejores del 2022, así que tenía que verla. Y descubrí muchas cosas interesantes, además de una película que, aunque es un poco confusa (yo no entendía bien a donde quería llegar) es muy rica visualmente, entretenida y divertida.

De la mente de David O. Russell llegó esta película, en el 2022, con una cantidad de grandes actores asombrosa, algunos solo permanecieron en escena algunos minutos, pero la verdad que este recurso de presentar rostros altamente reconocidos marca un buen comienzo, pues ya estamos familiarizados con estas presencias y verlos caracterizados se hace más divertido. Me encantaron todas las actuaciones, incluyendo la de Taylor Swift, que aunque no es actriz, me divirtió mucho.

Esta película está ambientada en la época de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y nada más al comenzar nos advierte que está basada en hechos reales, o casi. Y aquí hay otro punto divertido, pues todo el filme transcurre como una película cómica, inusual manera de presentarnos la historia, quizás, como quiso insinuar la película, una historia que la nación norteamericana estuvo feliz de olvidar. Y es, sin duda, una historia fascinante, pero que no me asombra en lo absoluto.

Una vez que la película me absorbió y me dejé llevar por la premisa que parecía absurda al principio pero que poco a poco me fue mostrando una de las mayores intrigas de la nación yanqui, por lo menos durante la era moderna. Una película sobre personas tan torpes que se ven envueltos en una conspiración internacional sin ni siquiera darse cuenta, brillante la solución del guion, dentro de una industria donde siempre nos muestran a los espías como seres casi diabólicos.

La química entre los 3 actores principales es evidente, y solo ellos y sus actuaciones logran sustentar la película, si a eso le sumas la inclusión de otros actores de renombre la situación es inmejorable. Me agradó ver de nuevo a Mike Myers, a un Robert de Niro cada vez más juguetón y divertido, Christian Bale que por fin siento empatía por uno de sus personajes, algo que no ocurría desde El Imperio del Sol.

Margot Robbie estuvo genial, muy parecida que su personaje de Harley Quinn, pero mucho más profunda y divertida, es genial la manera que tiene de interpretar a personas alternativas, sin perder jamás el glamour. Y John David, bueno, lo sentí esta vez más humano, más cercano y humano.

Vamos con la sinopsis de Filmaffinity:

Los efectos visuales, para recrear al Nueva York de 1933 estuvieron muy bien logrados, siempre he tenido la ilusión que la luz ambiental cambia de acuerdo de la época, y puedo asegurar, de acuerdo a mis recuerdos y las fotografías de la infancia, que la luz actual es muy diferente a la luz del ambiente de mi infancia, que se asemejaba bastante a la luz de 1933, aunque no soy tan vieja.

Yo no soy del tipo que anda cuestionando las decisiones del director, el productor o el guionista, yo simplemente me dejo llevar por la película y la acepto tal y como viene. Si tengo que despotricar de una película, significa que no me gustó y no la recomendaría jamás, pero Ámsterdam se nos presenta como una manera fresca de presentar la historia (mezclada con la ficción) muy divertida de ver, con situaciones a veces hilarantes y descabelladas.

Y es, según mi entender, una manera muy inteligente, por lo exagerada, de presentar hechos reales, al tiempo que aborda temas como la amistad, el amor y la lealtad. Las películas de época ejercen una fascinación sobre mis sentidos, en ellas cualquier cosa está permitida, hasta jugar con un nazismo floreciente en el país del norte.

He leído algunas críticas de esas las que salen en los periódicos y acusan a Ámsterdam de ser una mala película, una de las situaciones que reportan con argumento para su rechazo es que la intriga política no se muestra como tal, sino que se va insinuando por toda la cinta (es verdad que eso la vuelve un poco confusa) pero es también su mayor potencial, pues la trama no se basa en aburridos telegramas encriptados entre espías, ni en órdenes entre generales y subalternos, sino que pone en primera plana al elemento humano que logra detener, sin proponérselo, todo como una fuerza del destino, donde el amor y la amistad prevalecen ante el mal que parece desplegarse por el mundo.

Todas las películas de golpes de estado siempre se refieren a los hechos ocurridos, las acciones que se tomaron para dar como resultado la insurrección, sin tomar en cuenta a las personas involucradas, en el caso de Ámsterdam, estas personas terminan siendo parte de un entramado internacional que, definitivamente, no eligieron, pero que una vez dentro, intentan hacer lo mejor para todos, para la nación donde ocurre todo.

Y lo mejor es que nos presenta todo un abanico de situaciones, que nos ayuda a entender no solo a la época, también la mentalidad de las personas de esa época. Recomiendo esta película, no como lo mejor que ha pasado en el 2022, sino como una muy buena oportunidad de observar como todos estos actores danzan (y envían un mensaje al mundo) ante situaciones que están más cerca de la realidad de lo afirma esta propuesta cinematográfica.

Life brings surprises, like the one I got when I saw this movie, it is among the best of 2022, so I had to see it. And I discovered many interesting things, in addition to a film that, although it is a bit confusing (I didn't quite understand what I was getting at) is very visually rich, entertaining and fun.

From the mind of David O. Russell came this film, in 2022, with an amazing amount of great actors, some only stayed on stage for a few minutes, but the truth is that this resource of presenting highly recognized faces marks a good start, because we are already familiar with these presences and seeing them characterized becomes more fun. I loved all the performances, including that of Taylor Swift, who although she is not an actress, I had a lot of fun.

This movie is set in the World War I era, and right at the beginning it warns us that it is based on real events, or almost. And here is another funny point, because the whole film runs like a comic movie, an unusual way of presenting the story, perhaps, as the film wanted to insinuate, a story that the American nation was happy to forget. And it is, no doubt, a fascinating story, but one that does not astound me at all.

Once the movie sucked me in and I got carried away by the premise that seemed absurd at first but gradually showed me one of the biggest intrigues of the Yankee nation, at least during the modern era. A movie about people so clumsy that they get involved in an international conspiracy without even realizing it, brilliant the solution of the script, within an industry where we are always shown spies as almost diabolical beings.

The chemistry between the 3 main actors is evident, and only them and their performances manage to sustain the film, if you add to that the inclusion of other renowned actors the situation is unbeatable. I was pleased to see Mike Myers again, a Robert de Niro more and more playful and funny, Christian Bale who finally I feel empathy for one of his characters, something that had not happened since Empire of the Sun.

Margot Robbie was great, very similar to her Harley Quinn character, but much deeper and funnier, it's great the way she has of playing alternative people, without ever losing the glamour. And John David, well, I felt him this time more human, closer and more human.

The visual effects, to recreate the New York of 1933 were very well done, I have always had the illusion that the ambient light changes according to the time, and I can assure, according to my memories and childhood photographs, that the current light is very different from the ambient light of my childhood, which was quite similar to the light of 1933, although I'm not that old.

I'm not the type to go around questioning the decisions of the director, producer or screenwriter, I just go with the film and accept it as it comes. If I have to rant about a movie, it means I didn't like it and would never recommend it, but Amsterdam comes across as a fresh way of presenting history (mixed with fiction) that is a lot of fun to watch, with sometimes hilarious and wacky situations.

And it is, in my opinion, a very clever, if exaggerated, way of presenting real events, while dealing with themes such as friendship, love and loyalty. Period films exert a fascination on my senses, in them anything is allowed, even playing with a flourishing Nazism in the North Country.

I have read some of those reviews that come out in the newspapers and accuse Amsterdam of being a bad movie, one of the situations that they report as an argument for their rejection is that the political intrigue is not shown as such, but it is insinuated throughout the film (it is true that this makes it a little confusing) but it is also its greatest potential, because the plot is not based on boring encrypted telegrams between spies, nor on orders between generals and subordinates, but puts in the foreground the human element that manages to stop, without trying, everything as a force of destiny, where love and friendship prevail over the evil that seems to unfold around the world.

All coup d'état movies always refer to the events that occurred, the actions that were taken to result in the insurrection, without taking into account the people involved, in the case of Amsterdam, these people end up being part of an international network that they definitely did not choose, but once inside, they try to do what is best for everyone, for the nation where everything happens.

And the best thing is that it presents us with a whole range of situations, which helps us to understand not only the era, but also the mentality of the people of that time. I recommend this film, not as the best thing that has happened in 2022, but as a very good opportunity to observe how all these actors dance (and send a message to the world) to situations that are closer to reality than this film proposal states.
