Si queremos apreciar la más grande colección de arte venezolano, lo podemos hacer nada más entrar a la GAN (como comúnmente abreviamos la denominación de la Galería de Arte Nacional), un hito del arte de Venezuela, con un poco menos de 50 años de fundada. Hasta hace unos años compartía la sede del Museo de Bellas Artes, justo en el edificio neoclásico del que ya hablé un poco en este post. Incluso participé con performance del evento de Arte corporal en este edificio en una ocasión y de la inauguración de una exposición dedicada al trabajo artístico del grupo El Techo de la Ballena.

Ya han pasado algunos años desde que la GAN mudó sus obras a esta nueva sede, incluso ha sido sede de la Feria Internacional del Libro que cada año nos da un paseo por las novedades editoriales. Así que ahora la Galería tiene más trabajo que nunca.

Y poco a poco ha logrado desarrollar su propia impronta y ofrecer esa visión única del Arte venezolano, ubicándolos en las salas según sus tendencias o épocas a las cuales pertenece. Es muy hermoso caminar por estos pasillos y mirar con los ojos de adulta las obras que me acompañaron desde la infancia, ya sea porque hacían referencia a algún hecho histórico o porque aparecían en los libros de texto del colegio.

If we want to appreciate the largest collection of Venezuelan art, we can do it just by entering the GAN (as we commonly abbreviate the name of the National Art Gallery), a landmark of Venezuelan art, with a little less than 50 years of being founded. Until a few years ago it shared the headquarters of the Museo de Bellas Artes, right in the neoclassical building I already talked a bit about in this post. I even participated with performance of the Body Art event in this building on one occasion and the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to the artistic work of the group El Techo de la Ballena.

It's been a few years since the GAN moved its works to this new location, it has even hosted the International Book Fair that every year gives us a tour of the new publishing novelties. So now the Gallery has more work than ever.

And little by little it has managed to develop its own imprint and offer that unique vision of Venezuelan Art, placing them in the halls according to their trends or periods to which they belong. It is very beautiful to walk through these corridors and look with the eyes of an adult at the works that accompanied me since childhood, either because they referred to some historical event or because they appeared in school textbooks.

Como una verdadera amante de la belleza clásica y atemporal, visitar la GAN resulta verdaderamente gratificante y educativo, por más que haya visto estas obras, al volver a visitarlas, su belleza se renueva y encuentro nuevos detalles para la contemplación, por ejemplo en esta visita, descubrí las manos que suele pintar Arturo Michelena y me parecieron increíblemente grandes.

As a true lover of classical and timeless beauty, visiting the GAN is truly rewarding and educational, no matter how many times I have seen these works, upon revisiting them, their beauty is renewed and I find new details for contemplation, for example in this visit, I discovered the hands that Arturo Michelena usually paints and I found them incredibly large.

Francisco de Miranda, el más sexy prócer de Venezuela (junto a Antonio José de Sucre) según esta pintura de Michelena tiene las manos del mismo largo de su torso, o quizás sea una ilusión óptica por su extraña y poco anatómica pose, tengo muchos años oyendo lo imposible que es para una persona común alcanzar esa postura sin terminar con tortícolis o calambres, así que no es apta para descansar, pero es un gran artista y eso no se discute.

También descubrí este pequeño orzuelo que tiene esta famosa escultura del siglo pasado, de la cual tenemos en dos versiones, esta de mármol y una réplica en bronce, digo tenemos por son los museos quienes las tienen en custodia.

Los museos también sirven para resolver dudas existenciales. Si, como yo siempre te has preguntado: ¿cómo hizo Zeus para embarazar a Leda si se tuvo que transformar en cisne para que su apariencia de dios, ya saben que tenía un brillo como el del astro sol, capaz de quemar retinas y calcinar cuerpos humanos, no la matara? En el arte venezolano tenemos una posible respuesta, la embarazó por osmosis, no hubo contacto carnal, solo se entretuvieron con juegos previos.

I also discovered this little stye that has this famous sculpture of the last century, which we have in two versions, this marble and a bronze replica, I say we have because they are museums who have them in custody.

Museums also serve to solve existential doubts. If, like me, you have always wondered: how did Zeus impregnate Leda if he had to transform himself into a swan so that his appearance as a god, you know that he had a glow like the sun, capable of burning retinas and calcining human bodies, would not kill her? In Venezuelan art we have a possible answer, he impregnated her by osmosis, there was no carnal contact, they only entertained themselves with foreplay.

Como soy del tipo bajita, y la iluminación se interponía entre yo y las grandes fotografías que pude haber tomado, pues todos esos bombillos se reflejaban horriblemente en los lienzos, me pasé al team de las esculturas, ya que la iluminación las favorece al resaltar sus volúmenes y formas, más estas hermosas esculturas del Premio Nacional de Escultura Francisco Narváez. que nos regala las mejores siluetas de mujeres criollas de Venezuela, resaltando la labor en la agricultura.

As I am short, and the lighting was between me and the great photographs I could have taken, since all those bulbs reflected horribly on the canvases, I went to the sculpture team, since the lighting favors them by highlighting their volumes and shapes, plus these beautiful sculptures by the National Sculpture Prize winner Francisco Narváez, who gives us the best silhouettes of Venezuelan Creole women, highlighting their work in agriculture.

La modernidad en Venezuela, la decretaron los artistas, pintores que no toleraban seguir viviendo en el atraso que genera la inestabilidad política, entonces pasaron de banas representaciones de paisajes y naturalezas muertas o bodegones a plasmar conceptos sofisticados de la vida de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Así nacía El Círculo de Bellas y posteriormente La Escuela de Caracas, nuestra vanguardia artística.

Modernity in Venezuela was decreed by artists, painters who could no longer tolerate the backwardness generated by political instability, so they went from banal representations of landscapes and still lifes to sophisticated concepts of life in the first half of the twentieth century. Thus was born El Círculo de Bellas and later La Escuela de Caracas, our artistic avant-garde.

Estos grupos de artistas dieron lugar a otros grupos que buscaban expresar problemas más humanos que solo retratos de señoras de bien. También inspiraron a otros grupos, como el ya mencionado Techo de la Ballena. Un grupo irreverente y totalmente contracultural.

These groups of artists gave rise to other groups that sought to express more human problems than just portraits of well-to-do ladies. They also inspired other groups, such as the aforementioned Techo de la Ballena. An irreverent and totally countercultural group.
