Teatro Principal of Caracas [ESP / ENG]
In the heart of the city of Caracas, this magnificent construction imposes itself. It was inaugurated on April 18, 1931 under the creation of the architect Gustavo Wallis Legórburu, and was the first building in Venezuela to have an iron frame in its structure, a fact that we are grateful for, since we can enjoy it today.
It still preserves several traces of its Art Deco past in spite of the remodeling it underwent in 1953. For many years it kept its doors closed until it was reopened in 2011. It is famous for its artistic and musical presentations. Even Carlos Gardel performed on its stage. It was also a movie theater, but its fame is due to the artistic field, operas, plays and concerts. In fact it was a concert that led me to this space.
It is a building full of charm, inside and out, has a unique style, despite having been erased its past but not completely by the aforementioned renovations, but still retains its grandeur and magnificence. It is a flagship of the spirit of Caracas, since its inauguration until today, so it deserves a distinction. Being located on one of the corners of the Plaza Bolivar, it is surrounded by several historic buildings where government offices currently operate, this area is commonly called "The historic center of Caracas".
The building forms one of the most interesting corners in the region, and its facade is synonymous with cultural and entertainment space. And although half a block away is the historic Bolivar Theater, they do not compare, as the latter has suffered more with the renovations and now looks like a modern building. Although excavation details were left on some of its walls.
Its beautiful lobby opens the doors to an aesthetic that is difficult to replicate today. The marble stairs invite us to an adventure that we can access through the entrance to the hall. It has a capacity of 1,290 spectators distributed in a central courtyard and two balconies, once inside the room we can enjoy the art deco lamps that enhance the stage scene. Accompanied by an acoustic treatment in its walls.
Although the show that brought me to this room was the celebration of the National Rock Day, where the emblematic bands of Rock in Venezuela were presented, the aesthetics did not compete with the show, instead it served as a perfect setting for the presentation. It has a magical and timeless style. Very peculiar for this type of event.
Once inside the theatre, two majestic lamps appear at each end of the stage, for a moment I felt part of the movie "Brazil" by Terry Gilliam, because they are very similar to the graphics of the poster, it made me feel part of the architectural legacy of my city. The images I have of them are not very clear, but I can appreciate the sense and affection with which they were worked. With a marble base and crystals that complement an artistic work, like few that are still standing in Caracas.
The aisles of the theater also want to tell the story, as we find the original seats from the time of construction, there are even two showcases with some flyers from the golden age of the theater after its construction, and the other showcase shows us a part of the original wall and some vestiges of its construction.
The second part of the show I decided to enjoy it from the second floor balcony, to be able to appreciate and register the structure of the roof and I felt again in another era, as the floor was built with wood I felt the precariousness of the constructions of that historical moment, when surely everyone was used to it, but in our time and with the height, it feels a little insecure to walk there. But I still enjoyed the view.
Some elements present in the lobby, I overlooked at the entrance, but on the way out I noticed the change of the tiles, from the original style to the repair that was made in 1953. It is a pity that it cannot be completely preserved, that time has erased part of its legacy, because this jewel is cause for reflection, due to the little aesthetic enjoyment that some modern buildings in my city offer.

Hello beautiful!!! what a great pleasure that you also appreciate the love for Venezuela, because regardless of everything, it is our country and we should love it!!!
The historic center of Caracas is home to many architectural works of great value and with great artistic concept as far as I realize... And to think that I was living near there. I am glad that after so long after its remodeling they have opened the doors and also from what you show in your photos the building looks very well preserved in exteriors and interiors. Excellent information you share with us.

Yes, it is a blessing to be able to have these wonderful spaces! And to have access to them, because many jewels like these are only for the enjoyment of a small group of people, which I consider unfair!

Hello dear friend @caracasprin good morning
I appreciate that you let us know all this information about this beautiful municipal theater
I really like the construction style and the details that make it unique. The exterior design, with the interior marbled design is really very beautiful
It is a pleasure, a pleasure and an honor to bring to the community the buildings that I consider of great value in my city!
As I am proud of them I share them for your enjoyment, there are few left because of the modernism that wants to do away with everything!
Thank you for your comment!!!

Greetings dear @aplusd, sorry for the terrible confusion, but the link you provided me is from the country of Colombia, specifically the Plaza Bolivar in the city of Bogota, and I am referring to Caracas, Venezuela, the references used to investigate more about the historical process of the Teatro Principal I took from the website of Fundarte, I leave you the link.
I am sorry for the confusion, but I assure you that my posts are my own, and as I am afraid of plagiarism and its terrible consequences, I would be incapable of sinning of that.
Okay, no worries. Thank you for the clarification.

(EN)Thank you very much for the comment; it is a pleasure to learn about ways to improve the platform. I will correct it. My pleasure.
You are right when you say that this theater has wanted to erase the past, when I worked in this area about 25 years ago it was a movie theater where only Mexican movies were shown, almost nobody went in there. But then they remodeled it and it looks very nice. I feel like going in now that I see it in your publication.
Let's rescue it and give it life, let's walk its spaces and never let it die. It is our duty to keep it safe from neglect and abandonment.
Congratulations @caracasprin! We're delighted to specially curate your awesome publication and award it RUNNER-UP in Architecture Brew #72. More power!
