My pets' lives now (Mitchu and Sortario) [ENG-ESP]

As many of you already know, over a month ago, my country—Venezuela—was struck by a double earthquake. The area where we lived was among the hardest hit; sadly, our home was left almost entirely in ruins. Thank God, my husband, our pets, and I managed to make it out alive.

As you can imagine, our lives changed in an instant, and that included the routines of our beloved pets.

In the days immediately following the quake, we had to stay for four days at the home of a lady who took us in with great kindness—even though she isn't particularly fond of animals. Those days were very difficult for our cat and dog. Mitchu (our cat) was deeply traumatized; she had a vacant, lost look in her eyes and barely moved, simply gazing at me as if asking, "What happened?" The entire experience was especially traumatic for her—filled with fear, in a strange place surrounded by strangers. Meanwhile, Sortario was extremely anxious. Those days were incredibly hard for all of us, though we remained grateful to have a roof over our heads, food, and—best of all—to be together 💕

Five days after the tragedy, we went to my mother-in-law's house in the capital; she was eagerly awaiting our arrival and gave us a room to sleep in—a truly comfortable one where our pets spend most of their time. The first few days were very difficult because Mitchu and Sortario were used to having free rein; in our previous home, they could roam practically anywhere, and our little cat used to climb all over the place. We also had clear-glass windows there that stayed closed, allowing her to gaze outside for long periods; here, the windows are open, which isn't safe for her. There are times during the day when we open the door and let her out to explore for a while—though we do supervise her, as there are different rules here that we must respect. For now, she sleeps a lot during the day, just as she always has; she loves sleeping in the closet drawers where we keep our clothes or, of course, in our bed. At night, however, she is quite active; she climbs the furniture in the room and makes a lot of noise. Sometimes we don't sleep very well because she wakes us up with her adorable meows or the racket she makes while exploring the room for new things.

As for our little dog Sortario, I think things have been a bit easier because he was already familiar with my mother-in-law's house; he used to come along whenever we visited. However, just like our cat, he spends most of his time in the bedroom. He misses the sofa where he used to rest—something he can't do here, of course. Even though my mother-in-law likes animals, they aren't allowed on the sofas. Thankfully, we managed to find a very warm blanket for him to sleep on, and sometimes the little cat keeps him company. A real plus is that there’s a lovely park nearby where we can take the pets for walks; Sortario does his business there, and if we aren't in a rush, we take the opportunity to go for a stroll.

Overall, they don't have the same freedom they used to, but they are still well-loved and well-cared for by us; they haven't gone without food or shelter. Little by little, we’ve been buying the few things they need. We lost almost everything in the earthquake, but thanks to some donations, we’ve been able to buy Sortario’s medication—which is crucial for protecting him against parasites, fleas, and ticks—as well as food bowls, a scratching post for Mitchu (essential for burning off energy), a collar and leash so we can walk our dog more safely, and, of course, their food.

The most important thing is that they have us and we have them; we really have no idea how our lives will unfold from here on out, but we aren't leaving our pets behind 💕

Como muchos ya saben, hace más de un mes, mi país Venezuela fue azotado por un doble terremoto, siendo una de las más afectadas la zona en donde residía, lamentablemente nuestro hogar quedo casi en su totalidad en ruinas, gracias a Dios mi esposo, nuestras mascotas y yo pudimos salir con vida.

Como comprenderán nuestra vida cambio de un momento a otro incluyendo la rutina de nuestras amadas mascotas.

Los primeros días, después del sismo nos tuvimos que quedar 4 días en casa de una señora que nos acogió con mucho amor, aunque ella no es muy amante de los animales, esos días fueron muy difíciles para nuestra gata y perrito, Mitchu (gata) estaba tan traumatizada, con la mirada como perdida y casi ni se movía, solo me miraba como preguntando, que paso? para ella fue especialmente traumático todo lo vivido, estaba llena de miedo, en un lugar extraño para ella, con personas extrañas y Sortario se encontraba sumamente ansioso, esos días fueron muy difíciles para todos, aunque estamos agradecidos porque tuvimos un techo en donde dormir, comida y lo mejor de todo estábamos juntos 💕

Pasado 5 días después de la tragedia nos fuimos a casa de mi suegra en La capital, ella nos estaba esperando con muchas ansias y nos dio una habitación para dormir, realmente es bastante cómoda, en esta habitación nuestras mascotas pasan la mayor parte del tiempo, los primeros días fue muy difícil, porque Mitchu y Sortario estaban acostumbrados a estar libres, en nuestro hogar anterior ellos podían prácticamente andar por todos lados, nuestra gatita se trepaba por todas partes, además tenía unas ventanas con vidrios transparentes que permanecían cerradas y ella podía mirar mucho tiempo hacia afuera, aquí en donde nos encontramos ahora las ventanas están abiertas y no es seguro para ella, hay momentos al día en que le abrimos la habitación y dejamos que salga un rato a explorar, eso si, la supervisamos porque aquí hay otras reglas y las debemos respetar, por los momentos ella en el día duerme mucho como siempre, le encanta dormir en los gavetas del closet que tienen nuestra ropa o por supuesto en nuestra cama, en la noche está bastante activa, se trepa por los muebles que están en la habitación y hace mucho ruido, a veces no dormimos muy bien porque nos despierta con sus adorables maullidos o con los ruidos que hace en la habitación en su búsqueda por encontrar cosas nuevas.

Nuestro perrito Sortario, creo que ha sido un poco más fácil porque el ya conocía la casa de mi suegra, en otras oportunidades que veníamos de visita el venía con nosotros, pero igualmente que nuestra gata, el pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en la habitación, extraña su sofá en donde descansaba, aquí por supuesto él no puede hacer lo mismo, aunque a mi suegra le gustan los animales, está prohibido que se suban a los sofás, gracias a Dios logramos rescatar una cobija muy cálida y allí duerme, a veces la gatita le hace compañía, algo muy bueno es que tenemos un parque muy bonito en donde podemos sacar a pasear a las mascotas, Sortario hace su pipi y popo, además aprovechamos y si no hay apuros le damos un paseo.

En línea general, ellos no tienen la libertad que tenían antes, pero siguen siendo bien amados y atendidos por nosotros, no les ha faltado alimento ni hogar, poco a poco le hemos ido comprando algunas cositas que necesitan, en el terremoto se perdió casi todo, gracias a algunas donaciones hemos comprado la pastilla para Sortario, esa pastilla es súper necesaria para cuidarlo de parásitos, pulgas y garrapatas, también hemos podido comprar envase para que coman sus alimentos, el rascador de Mitchu, muy necesario porque allí ella libera mucha energía, compramos el collar y la correa para poder sacar a pasear a nuestro perro de forma más segura y por supuesto sus alimentos.

Lo más importante es que ellos nos tienen a nosotros y nosotros a ellos, realmente no tenemos ni idea como va a seguir nuestra vida de ahora en adelante, pero a nuestras mascotas no las dejamos atrás 💕
