Our visit to the Cathedral of Puerto Cabello [ESP/ENG]

Today, I want to share a bit more about the trip my sisters and I took about a month ago to the city of Puerto Cabello. The first thing we did upon arrival was visit its most important church, the Cathedral of San José. A priest was waiting there to give us a tour and share some background information; I was surprised to learn that, although construction was completed in 1852, it was only designated as a cathedral relatively recently, in 1994. It is an imposing Roman-style building with a beautiful interior. Fortunately, we not only had the chance to explore the architecture and the inside of the church, but we also witnessed one of the most beautiful cultural and religious traditions: the dance of Saint John the Baptist. Performed by various brotherhoods, the event begins with Mass and concludes in the streets, where parishioners carry the image of Saint John the Baptist to the rhythm of drums.
Hoy quiero mostrarle un poco más del viaje que hicimos mis hermanas y yo hace un mes aproximadamente a la ciudad de Puerto Cabello, lo primero que hicimos al llegar a la ciudad fue conocer su templo más importante, La Catedral de San José. Allí nos esperaba el sacerdote para darnos un recorrido por el templo y darnos la información correspondiente, me sorprendió saber que aunque se terminó de construir en 1852, su nombramiento como catedrales relativamente reciente, de 1994. Es un edificio imponente, de tipo romano, y por dentro es precioso, afortunadamente no solo tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer el interior y su parte arquitectónica sino que también pudimos presenciar una de las manifestaciones culturales y religiosas más hermosas, como lo es el baile de San Juan Bautista, el cuál se lleva a cabo por distintas cofradías, esta actividad inicia con misas y termina en las calles con los feligreses llevando la imagen de San Juan Bautista al ritmo de tambores.
From the outside, it is also an imposing temple; here is a photograph so you can see how it is built—using solid bricks, just like most structures during the colonial era.
Por fuera también es un templo imponente, por aquí les dejo una fotografía para que vean como está construido, a base de ladrillos sólidos, como se hacían la mayoría de construcciones en los tiempos de la colonia
We were also taken on a tour of the temple's interior, including the bell tower; honestly, I didn't want to go to the upper level—let alone the bell tower—because of my bad knees. However, one of my sisters did go up, so the photos I’m sharing below are courtesy of her. They show a beautiful view of the city and, in particular, the sea stretching along Puerto Cabello—fitting, given that it is, as the name implies, a port city.
También nos llevaron a recorrer el interior del templo, incluyendo el campanario, pero honestamente yo no quise ir a la parte superior y mucho menos al campanario porque mis rodillas me lo impiden, sin embargo, una de mis hermanas lo hizo, así que estas fotografías que les mostraré a continuación son cortesía de ella, hay una hermosa vista de la ciudad y en especial del mar que se extiende a lo largo de Puerto Cabello, ya que como su nombre lo indica, esta es una ciudad portuaria.
In the meantime, I took photos of the church's interior; it is beautiful. Incidentally, several figures of local and national historical importance are buried there, such as General Juan P. Peñaloza, General Rafael María Carabaño, General Manuel Urbina, and Dr. Carlos Irazábal Pérez.
Yo mientras tanto tomé las fotos del interior de la iglesia, es preciosa. Por cierto allí están enterrados algunos personajes ilustres de la historia local y nacional como El General Juan P. Peñaloza, El General Rafael María Carabaño, El General Manuel Urbina y El Dr. Carlos Irazábal Pérez.
As you can see, the spiral staircases leading to the upper part of the church and the bell tower are very narrow and steep, and I knew my knees would suffer if I went up them—haha—so my sister Victoria and I decided to stay below.
Como se pueden dar cuenta las escaleras de caracol para acceder a la parte superior de la iglesia y al campanario son muy estrechas y empinadas y yo sabía que si subía por ahí mis rodillas lo iban a resentir, jaja, así que mi hermana Victoria y yo decidimos quedarnos abajo.
It was a wonderful visit from which my sisters and I learned a lot. We hope to have more outings like this, because not only do we learn and have fun, but we also strengthen the bonds we share as sisters who grew up very close. These memories will stay with us forever—in our minds and in our hearts.
Fue una visita muy bonita de la cuál aprendimos mucho mis hermanas y yo, esperamos que salidas como estas se repitan porque no solo aprendemos mucho y nos divertimos, sino que también reforzamos nuestros lazos como hermanas que crecieron muy unidas 😊. Estos recuerdos se quedarán por siempre en nuestras memorias y corazones
