Review: Baker Street, a magical song [ENG/ESP]
Hello everyone here in the community! Today I bring a different article. Inspired by the nostalgia of the night and the accompaniment of good music, one of my favorite songs came to my mind, Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and I said to myself why not talk about it? And this song in particular has a lot of stuff to cut starting with its famous saxon riff, its guitar solo and a lyric to think about. So today I will talk about one of the greatest jazz hits and how it was able to inspire a new generation to get to know this beautiful instrument, the saxophone. Let's start!
Gerry Rafferty was a Swedish musician of Irish descent, who in 1978 released his second solo album entitled "City to City" (which included the song Baker Street), after four years of an abrupt separation from his former band, Stealers Wheels, and a modest first solo album. In the midst of some legal conflicts, Rafferty was dealing with some personal problems and as a musician, since he could not find the melody for one of his lyrics. That lyric was composed during his travels in Paisley and London where he sheltered from the conflicts under the wing of his family and friends.

Inspirada por la nostalgia de la noche y el acompañamiento de buena música, se vino a mi mente una de mis canciones preferidas, Baker Street de Gerry Rafferty y me dije ¿Por qué no hablar sobre ello? Y es que este tema en específico tiene mucha tela de que cortar empezando por su famoso riff de saxon, su solo de guitarra y una letra para reflexionar. Así que hoy te hablaré sobre uno de los éxitos de jazz más grandes y el cómo fue capaz de inspirar a una nueva generación a conocer este hermoso instrumento, el saxon ¡Comencemos!
Gerry Rafferty fue un músico sueco con ascendencia irlandensa, quién en el año 1978 sacó a la venta su segundo disco solista titulado "City to City" (en el que incluiría la canción Baker Street), después de tres años de una abrupta separación de su antigua banda, Stealers Wheels y un primer disco solista modesto. En medio de algunos conflictos legales, Rafferty lidiaba con algunos problemas personales y como músico, ya que no conseguía concretar la melodía para una de sus letras. Aquella letra fue compuesta durante sus viajes en Paisley y Londres dónde se resguardo de los conflictos bajo el ala de su familia y amigos.
The point is that Rafferty managed to bring out a revelation in that lyric; his father's alcoholism problem and his own. In it he tells us about a man who dreams of having a normal life, a home to come home to, to leave the old neighborhood, to be a decent person but who fails to achieve it thanks to his addiction to alcohol, so he plunges into an infinite loop of promises and failures until he decides to finally escape from the neighborhood where he lives, Baker Street. In a poetic way, Rafferty portrays the pain behind the addict and the loneliness that this generates. If this lyric could already convince us that the song would be something great, now comes the best part.
If there is something that characterizes Baker Street, it is its melodious Saxon riff. The inclusion of this riff was thanks to Raphael Ravenscroft, who was called by Rafferty to record a short part of the song. Ravenscroft stated that the song had several gaps to fill, it didn't quite fit, and suggested Rafferty to include some verses with his alto saxophone (and not with the soprano), the same one that, by the way, he fortunately had in his car. It is thanks to this miraculous inclusion that today we can enjoy those four glorious bars that effectively overshadow the rest of the song.
La cuestión es que Rafferty logró aflorar en esa letra una revelación; el problema de alcoholismo de su padre y el de él. En ella nos habla sobre un hombre que sueña con tener una vida normal, un hogar al que llegar, salir del viejo barrio, ser una persona decente pero que no logra alcanzarlo gracias a su adicción al alcohol, por lo que se sumerge en un bucle infinito de promesas y fracasos hasta que decide escapar por fin del barrio de dónde vive, Baker Street. De una forma poética, Rafferty retrata el dolor detrás del adicto y la soledad que está genera. Si ya con esta letra podía convencernos de que la canción sería algo grande, ahora viene la mejor parte.
Si hay algo que caracteriza a Baker Street, es su melodioso Riff de Saxon. La inclusión de este riff fue gracias a Raphael Ravenscroft, quién fue llamado por Rafferty para grabar una breve parte de la canción. Ravenscroft afirmó que la canción tenía varios huecos por llenar, no terminaba de encajar, y sugirió a Rafferty incluir algunos versos con su saxofón alto (y no con el soprano), el mismo que por cierto, tenía afortunadamente en su auto. Es gracias a esta inclusión milagrosa que hoy en día podemos disfrutar de esos cuatro compases gloriosos y que efectivamente, opaco al resto de la canción.
In addition, the guitar solo is unforgettable in the hands of Hugh Burns. When you hear the saxophone you almost expect it to go on forever and that only something equally great can top it, so the guitar solo comes in at just the right time. As I said above, Rafferty's story here seems poignant (and it is) but we can't help but think of these two instruments (and the others) that provided so much magic if not, in effect, the magic itself. And well, Baker Street went down in history and Rafferty's name reached the limelight.
Sadly, this story did not have a happy ending as Rafferty's fame and the arrival of generous profits from the City to City album only increased his love of alcohol and music was put on the back burner. Rafferty released a few more albums in the following years but without the success of his predecessor. He finally died in 2011 due to kidney failure as a side effect of his alcoholism. It seems that Rafferty truly embodied the man in his song, Baker Street. But despite the dismal, I consider that his work will never be forgotten because it brought a wave of new jazz and saxophone lovers, besides being a recurring song in movies and series (remember Lisa and bleeding gums), reference of one of the best saxophone riff and interpreted by thousands of musicians. Además el solo de guitarra es inolvidable en manos de Hugh Burns. Cuando escuchas el saxofón casi esperas que continúe por siempre y que solo algo igual de grande puede superarlo, por ello el solo de guitarra resulta entrar en el momento indicado. Cómo comenté arriba, acá la historia de Rafferty parece conmovedora (y lo es) pero no podemos dejar de pensar en estos dos instrumentos (y los demás) que brindaron mucha magia sino,son en efecto, la magia en sí. Y bien, Baker Street quedó para la historia y el nombre de Rafferty alcanzó la luz pública.
Lamentablemente, esta historia no tiene un final feliz ya que la fama de Rafferty y la llegada de generosas ganancias por el disco City to City, solo incrementaron su amor por el alcohol y la música fue quedando en segundo plano. Rafferty lanzó algunos discos más en los siguientes años pero sin el éxito del antecesor. Finalmente muere en el año 2011 debido a una falla renal como efecto colateral de su alcoholismo. Parece que Rafferty encarnó realmente al hombre de su canción, Baker Street. Pero a pesar de lo funesto, considero que su trabajo jamás será olvidado pues trajo una ola de nuevos amantes del jazz y del saxofón, además de ser una canción recurrente en películas y series (recordemos a Lisa y a encías sangrantes), referencia de uno de los mejores riff de saxon e interpretada por miles de músicos.
