I Made Sushi!!!

Hey guys! Today I made sushi for dinner with my Mum. I am very excited about it, because it is a rare treat in my house because of all the time it takes to make. I absolutely love Japanese food, and ever since I was very small my mum has been teaching me how to cook all sorts of wonderful things. My mum and I made roughly 18 sushi rolls, and miso soup, and it took us about 3 hours total. You guys are gonna be so proud of me, I even remembered to take tons of pictures for you.

Hallo Leute!

So, the most important thing to remember when making sushi is to make sticky rice, or sushi rice. Basically, this just means to cook short grain white rice, make sure to rinse it very well before you cook it, and add rice vinegar with a bit of salt and sugar in it after it is cooked. the result is sticky rice that is perfect for sushi rolls.

We had crab meat, smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, carrots, cucumber, and sesame seeds for the filling. The process of rolling them is rather simple, it is just important to put a very small amount of the filling in them, and to keep your fingers wet to keep the rice from sticking as much. We also have bamboo mats for rolling them, that we covered in plastic wrap to help the rice not stick to them.

First I put a piece of dried seaweed onto the mat, and then put a small row of rice on the seaweed. It kind of shows it in the picture, but the mat only rolls in one direction, so it is important to put the row of rice parallel with the sticks in the mat. After that, I put all of the fillings I want on top of the rice. To roll it, I pick up the side of the mat that is closest to me and use it to fold one side of the seaweed over the fillings and sort of squish it to roll it tightly. After that I wet the seaweed slightly to make it sticky, and use the mat to help roll it the rest of the way. It feels very similar to rolling a small burrito.

I cut each roll into 6-8 pieces with a sharp knife, being very careful. There is also a way to make an inside-out roll, where the rice is on the outside.

First I spread a layer of rice on the mat.

Then I put a piece of seaweed and a row of filling in the middle. After that I roll it very carefully and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
