The Cathedrals Beach (Ribadeo)

avatar

Good morning,

The beach of Aguas Santas is popularly known as the Beach of the Cathedrals because of the large rocks in the form of arches and towers, very similar to those seen in Christian temples.

The characteristic of this beach are the arches and caves, only visible from the beach at low tide.

Photography submitted to Photofeed contest

At low tide you can access a long sandy area delimited by a rocky wall of slate and schist eroded into whimsical shapes: arches more than thirty meters high that resemble flying buttresses of a cathedral.

At the same time, along the sandy area you can discover different caves of different sizes.

And one can also contemplate a long corridor of sand between large blocks of rock.

In the case of wanting to visit this beach in the summer season or during the Easter vacations it is necessary to make a reservation on the website of the government of Galicia because it is a very busy place and in order to preserve it, access is limited to a certain number of visitors per day.

Greetings.

I read over the last couple of years that a famous arch like these collapsed during a storm. Was it in this region?

A few years ago there was a death due to the collapse of an arch. Since then, more inspections have been carried out to prevent this from happening and if any of the arches are found to have problems, they are closed.

Thank you. That's good to know. I think the one that we saw in the news, it happened at night, and was only noticed the next morning, but I don't remember where in the word it was located.
