From gratitude to realising how beautiful it is to celebrate life, here is my contribution:

I remember that when I was a child, my mother always tried to bake us a cake on our birthdays; she used to say it was so that our special day wouldn’t go unnoticed. Those were difficult times; for my parents, our livelihood and education were the priority – they were focused on laying the foundations to build our home.

Each and every one of us deserves to be celebrated

The truth is that my mother’s saying, ‘so that our day doesn’t go unnoticed’, is a lovely way of saying that each and every one of us deserves to be celebrated, seen and valued on our special day.

That small but significant gesture – the effort of baking a cake whatever the circumstances – leaves an indelible mark. It wasn’t just about eating a dessert, but about the time, the love and the ritual of knowing that, for at least twenty-four hours, the world paused for a moment to celebrate my life.

And that’s exactly how it is today: whenever I smell something baking or see a birthday cake, I’m reminded of that homely warmth my mum used to give me.

The flavour of the cake she used to make – which instantly transports me back to those childhood birthdays – was pumpkin and cheese, such a traditional combination, full of local flavour; for me, it’s a real gem of home baking, as my mother went out of her way to give us the very best and spoil us in a very special way.

Such an intimate and meaningful toast

As we grew up, we learnt to make different cakes and desserts, to look for decorating ideas, and so we transformed a space in the house whilst preparing for our birthday parties; even if it’s just a simple get-together with our loved ones, it becomes something very meaningful, because it’s a way of celebrating that wonderful event called Life.

In any case, my hope – or the plan I allow myself to imagine for this new year of life, which, God willing, will be on 10 December – would be to celebrate it with my family, whether at home or by going out for a meal, surrounded by the people who love me most.

Not missing the chance to be with my loved ones is the perfect plan for a toast as intimate and meaningful as celebrating that thing we call Life.

It’s wonderful to celebrate life

So if it’s wonderful to celebrate life and the person I’ve become – even though I know I have my flaws, I also have my virtues – even if I can keep only the beautiful things in my heart: lots of love, beautiful memories, beautiful feelings, life lessons.

All those memories are what make me realise what I’m capable of achieving – everything I set my mind to. It won’t always be easy, but I have the most important thing on my side: that desire to come out on top and make my dreams come true.

I dream that anything is possible

I always dream that anything is possible, by putting my whole heart into what I do, however small it may seem. It’s key to think big, always being certain that if I persevere in achieving my life’s goals, I’ll be able to reach them.

In any case, by clearing away negative feelings and holding on to only good and positive things – cherishing all that is beautiful, kind, wholesome and pure – the goodness in our hearts will be reflected in our faces and in our health.

There is no better place to recharge my batteries than in the warmth of home and the love of my family, for I already possess what is most precious: the love of my loved ones and a grateful heart.

I firmly believe that a heart cleansed of impurities will bring us closer to God, because whatever I desire, I ask for from the heart of the universe, from our Creator, and I wait with confidence. If what I ask for is good for me, it will be granted; if it is not good, I will be given something better.
