Greetings to our friends in the @holos-lotus community, with this reflection from our dear @emiliorios on the topic
‘Being Happy… Are We Forcing Ourselves to Be Happy – or to Be Better People?’; as if we were under an obligation to act as though nothing in life were a challenge that might cause us to worry or prompt us to reflect on how to resolve it – so that our problems remain hidden. That’s why everyone is turning to self-help books to achieve that much-coveted happiness we’ve been told exists online. Here’s my contribution:
I think that perhaps we can try to find things outside ourselves to fulfil us and make us happy, but they are all short-lived; and although it is not easy to find happiness within ourselves, neither is it possible to find it anywhere else, because if my happiness lies within me, no other person or thing can give it to me,
The feeling that something is missing
So I might try to find all sorts of things outside myself to fulfil me and make me happy; perhaps we think that success, recognition, respect, money and prestige will do that for us, but the truth is that they all have an expiry date – they are pleasant for a moment, but the feeling that something is missing remains.
This does not mean that a happy person cannot have all these trappings of success – of course they can – but happiness is not the result of these symbols of well-being.
Happiness is subtle; it only happens within. I have the opportunity to open myself up to happiness, and I have experienced it in particular when I have felt that sense of joy inside me.
One example is when we change our mobile phones: just as we see improvements in mobile phones, we can also make changes within ourselves to become better people.

A harmonious relationship with those around me and with my own existence
When I stop to reflect on the nature of human fulfilment – the stage at which many of us find ourselves seeking material well-being, validation or achievements in the outside world – it is a response to an inner need.
The reality is that success, money or recognition are pleasant and can make our lives easier; they act as temporary stimuli, as a form of relief, but they do not transform the very core of how we feel about ourselves.
I believe that true fulfilment is a state of being, a harmonious relationship with those around me and with my own existence, which depends on being true to my actions whilst continuing to do good.
Happiness is intangible; it is a state of being. Success is not at odds with happiness; the problem arises when we make these factors the foundation of our inner peace, because when they are in their rightful place – such as when I have felt the satisfaction of helping others without expecting anything in return, simply as a gesture of support – that is where I can find that sense of fulfilment: within myself.
Both happiness and depression come and go
When I make happiness a goal, I start constantly assessing whether I’ve already achieved it or how far I still have to go; perhaps that frequent checking causes me anxiety and pressure, and even saps my energy to enjoy a heartfelt hug, a favourite meal in peace, or spending quality time with my family. If I try to treat any natural emotion – such as sadness, boredom or anger – as a permanent state, then if I suppress sadness, happiness goes with it too.
For example, both happiness and depression come and go; until we realise that they have something to teach us, they will both return, for it is up to each of us as individuals to learn from them, and that is what makes all the difference.
So if my happiness is a gift, my depression is also a gift, because these emotions are like butterflies in my life.

When I pursue happiness, it becomes elusive
In particular, a recent reading of Anne Wilson Schaef’s book, Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much, has led me to reflect that if I seek happiness, it becomes elusive; this highlights the difference between material well-being and inner peace.
I think there is a contradiction in that statement: the more I pursue happiness directly, the further it moves away from me. This happens because, when I seek it and see it coming, I want it to stay with me forever, and as soon as I’ve seen it, it slips away.
The same process applies to depression: it arrives and grows until I give it my attention and learn what it has to teach me, and then it goes away.
As the psychologist Viktor Frankl said, happiness is not something to be pursued; it is found as a consequence of devoting oneself to something that is meaningful to us, of connecting genuinely with others, or of living in the present without the pressure of having to feel a certain way.
Someone once said:*‘Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it eludes you; but if you sit quietly, it may alight upon you.’
