LOH#291 The value of not walking alone.jpg

In English

Greetings, friends of the #LadiesofHive community. In this week’s edition, which invites us to reflect on the questions posed by our dear @priyanarc, here is my response to the first one:

Did anyone support you during your toughest time? How did they help you?

I believe that all human beings go through a wide variety of circumstances throughout our lives, each one very different from the next. These situations affect some people differently from others; they can cause us sadness, such as a chronic illness, a divorce or separation, the death of a loved one, or even the loss of a job or financial difficulties. No one can escape these things.

Support or help from someone

In such painful situations, we feel as though every part of us aches; we may even grow weary of life itself, because emotional pain isn’t confined to the mind; it is felt in the body, weighs heavily on our shoulders and drains our energy as if we had just run a marathon.

So everyone reacts differently; life doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but it does come with the certainty that, sooner or later, we will have to go through pain, and often we have had someone’s support or help.

I believe that pain is universal, but the way we experience it is deeply personal, because the diversity of human pain lies in the fact that no one escapes loss or crisis. What may be a bump in the road for one person can feel like an abyss for another. And both reactions are entirely valid.

Needing one another

In particular, I went through the break-up of a long-term relationship, but with the help of my daughter—who was a teenager at the time—she arranged for me to see a professional, which prevented me from falling into a deep depression. Thank God, I was eventually able to bring that chapter to a close and move on without any hard feelings.

With my mother’s illness and passing, almost three years ago now, my sisters, my brother and I supported one another, for all we have left is our shared humanity, and a fundamental part of being human is, precisely, needing one another.

Just as much of the family helped us through those difficult times, recognising that we need that comfort, that helping hand or those words of encouragement is not a sign of weakness; on the contrary, it is an act of profound courage and honesty with oneself.

Sometimes, a single sentence spoken at just the right moment, a silent hug, or knowing that someone is there on the other end of the phone is the beacon that allows us to weather the storm until the sea calms down. No one should have to be strong all the time.

The value of not walking alone

I reflect on how valuable the role of others is in our lives; although the healing process is intimate and personal, isolation is often our worst enemy in dark times. Someone once said: ‘Shared sorrow is half as painful; shared joy is twice as sweet.’

Having someone who listens without judging, who holds your hand or who is simply there in the silence, does not erase the difficult situation, but it does remind us that we are still connected to the world, that we matter. Sometimes, help comes from a friend, family or a professional; the important thing is to allow ourselves to receive it.

Resilience, in my case with hearing loss, does not mean being made of stone or feeling nothing; it means having the capacity to let our guard down, to cry, to feel exhausted and, eventually, to pick ourselves up again with the pieces we have left. It is a compassionate reminder that we are vulnerable, and in that vulnerability also lies our strength.

Having that family support network

Fortunately, in times when the ground seems to shake, I have been blessed to have that family support network and that very special bond with my daughter, and I know it is a true treasure. Often, a child’s love becomes that silent driving force that propels us forward, even when our own strength is running low.

Knowing that I am surrounded by that support not only lightens the burden of difficulties, and in my case, having hearing aids has been a help in my daily life, but it also fills my heart with gratitude—one of the most healing emotions there is—and may faith in God always be my greatest strength.

I think that at some point we all need a helping hand, or words of comfort and support; after all, we are human. It fills me with joy to know that, on my gloomy days, I have had those beacons of light by my side. In the end, those bonds of love and companionship are what truly give meaning to everything and help us to heal.

You are truly blessed to have a daughter and a lovely family who support you always, whenever needed. Walking alone in life or living alone is difficult, and that's why many people nowadays deal with mental health issues. Support from others always helps to be honest...Thanks for sharing...

Support from family and friends is important and much needed for all of us. It's how God has wired us-to need Him and one another at all times.

I've not heard this put the way you said it......

Someone once said: ‘Shared sorrow is half as painful; shared joy is twice as sweet.’

.....but it is so true! Thank you for sharing and have a lovely day! !LADY ❤️🌹
