I hope it will rain coffee

Tukayera was the chieftain of a large tribe. That morning he was in the middle of his soliloquy with the nature gods on the prayer hill. He was desperately asking for a guide to help them.

From the central hut of the village, he could be seen praying. His wife watched him and noticed from afar the concern of her companion. The tribe was hungry and could not get the land to give them a single harvest.

They planted vegetables and days later everything withered. The stories of their ancestors said that the land had been cursed by man's behavior and they were condemned to no longer have the benefits that nature offered them. So bringing in a good harvest was becoming increasingly difficult.

Suddenly, a blinding light illuminated the prayer hill for a few minutes. The villagers ran to look for the casique and when they reached the place, they found Tukayera lying on the ground. They picked him up and the old man, still dazed, told them with a smile that the gods had heard the prayers.

They prepared everything for the harvest ritual and Tukayera stood on a stone and began to recite the verses of a prayer that the gods whispered in his ear as the light visited him.

"I hope it will rain coffee in the countryside
Let there be a heavy rain of cassava roots and tea"....

All the villagers knelt down and the black clouds began to gather.

"Let a drizzle of white cheese fall from the sky
And to the South a mountain of pepper grass and honey
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh,
I hope it will rain coffee"...

At that a heavy storm formed and it began to rain. The drops were not of water, but of delicious espresso coffee. The villagers embraced each other, for it had been many months since they had seen rain.

It rained and rained, while the earth was nourished by the coffee. Tukayera explained to the villagers the message given to her by the gods, the earth was to be nourished to alleviate those damages done to it in the past. It was like erasing everything and starting over.

So Tukayera suggested taking out the fishing boats that the families had and they boarded along with a couple of animals of each species. All the while it continued to rain coffee in torrents.

The accumulated levels of coffee flooded the riverbeds that had been dry for some time. The coffee overflowed and the coffee rain quickly turned into a deluge that caused the land to flood.

The coffee rain stopped and the sun began to evaporate the liquid that flooded everything up to the hills. As the days went by, the coffee level went down and down and the delicious aroma that the vapor gave off was unique and magical. The tribe found a place on the hill to establish their new home.

They planted and the land flourished. The crops were abundant and tranquility reigned in the village.

Tukayera decided that they would pass those verses from generation to generation as a reminder of that deluge of coffee that returned nutrients to the earth and as a lesson that we should take care of nature and thus be able to take advantage of the goodness it offers us.

Today we can still hear the coffee growers, the farmers, the men and women who work the land singing while planting and harvesting their crops: I hope that it rains coffee in the field.
