Peace for a few seconds, thanks to a cup of coffee
We arrived at a city and everything was destroyed. Rubble, blood and bodies littered the streets. My squad started walking around looking for survivors but there were none. We took some ammunition that looked like the other side and some food.
A small dog joined the platoon and we gave him a name "Muchacho ". We continued walking through the desolate destroyed streets and our new mascot found something buried. As we got closer we saw that it was the tip of a tower.
It was the twisted tip of the famous Eiffel Tower. I felt a huge emptiness in my chest and I thought of all that it cost humanity to build, to construct those beautiful cities, to train professionals, to innovate in technology, for nothing. The war reduced everything to garbage, misfortune and pain. And unfortunately we are also responsible for this.
We left that place, which I regretted not having visited when it was one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We arrived at a shelter, we would spend the night there so we tried to make ourselves comfortable. Although that word no longer means the same as it used to.
That night the cook prepared us some delicious hamburgers and a steaming cup of bitter coffee. The memories, the nostalgia of missing my people and my freedom, because since this war started almost 10 years ago we were never free again. The world was plunged into total disgrace and we missed how our lives were in the past.
I went into the kitchen and asked the cook to fill my water bottle with the precious dark liquid. The delicious coffee that would bring me luck to return from the approaching battle. With my caffeine reserve close to my chest, I headed to the front.
In the midst of the battle, the enemy side surprised my platoon and I saw many die. I had to hide under some rocks to avoid being killed.
In the midst of all the noise of gunfire from both sides, screams and explosions, I saw someone move. I pointed my gun at him and saw that he was a soldier from the enemy side in the same situation as me. We agreed to lower our weapons and hide there until the firing stopped.
The firing stopped and then came the sound of death as my friends and I called it. It was the moans of the dying wounded on the battlefield. This heart-rending sound makes even the bravest man crack.
When all was quiet, there was total silence. A sepulchral silence that escorts battles.
I pulled out my bottle of coffee and offered it to my companion. His tears ran down his cheeks and although we did not speak the same language we both understood that it was a new opportunity that life was giving us. One more day without dying. One more day breathing.
After we enjoyed our delicious bottle of coffee, in that sublime moment when two "enemies " drank the precious dark liquid together and looked into each other's eyes, to realize that we are the same. We are simply pawns who come to the battlefield to risk our lives for absurd ideals that make no sense. In a war there is no winner, in a war there is no victor.
We shook hands tightly and got out of that hole to go tell our companions about the experience and try to convince them to return home with a good cup of coffee. Let's hope we succeed in this mission.

Wao, very good story my friend @chacald.dcymt, without a doubt war leaves sequels that tear the soul and in a certain way the soldiers fight without having a clear vision of why they are doing it, where in many cases a war ends up being generated by politicians who are supposed to diplomatically solve a situation or problem. Greetings
You are absolutely right, that is the approach I wanted to give since the soldiers on the battlefield are handled like pawns on a chessboard and in the end they are all the same no matter which side they are on. Thanks for stopping by. Regards!

Buena suerte🤗🌸🦦🌱
Excellent story :D, I loved the epic ending...
No words. Excellent story, you have great creativity and a noble heart. Blessings!
Hello @chacald.dcymt, what a beautiful story of reflection you share with us on this occasion, that's what I ask myself when I see war movies if between the same soldiers of the same side do not end up killing each other, because between bullets and grenades I do not know how to distinguish between them.
It's good that these young people decided to share a good one.
¡Felicitaciones!
